THE MYSTERY OF MILO W. BARKER
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MILO W. BARKER?
Our illusive ancestor, Milo W. BARKER has been a real challenge to trace. According to the book "Historical Southern Families" Volume VI written by Boddie which talks about the 'Sanders, Jobe, Phillips, Reynolds of North Carolina and Texas, Milo W. BARKER first married Fannie PHILLIPS who was born about 1816. Her parents were Lazarus PHILLIPS [son of Ann ? and Jeremiah PHILLIPS] and Rachael SANDERS. Lazarus PHILLIPS was born in Chatham County, North Carolina, and there married Rachel SANDERS about 1797. Rachel SANDERS PHILLIPS was born about 1775 in Chatham County, North Carolina, and died in Tishomingo County, Mississippi after the 1850 Census. We believe that Fannie PHILLIPS or Lucinda MURRAY could have been the mother to part or all of Milo's children. Until we can prove which was the mother, the census must be our sole guide. And thus, the search for our Milo W. BARKER begins!
According to the approximate ages given in the following census, we believe that Milo W. BARKER was born about 1814, the place unknown. We do not know who his parents were, or any of his siblings.
In 1837 in the Western Mississippi State Census, #131, on Page #5, we find:
Milo W. BARKER and his household lists as follows:
1 - Male 21-45 years
1 - Male < 18
1 - Female > 16
On March 16, 1839, Milo W. BARKER signs indenture papers to Young SHORT for $400.00.
In June of 1839, Milo W. BARKER, along with two other individuals are involved in a law suit filed by a Samuel FLAKE. They were fined $60.00 plus $4.40 in damages. The exact charges are not clear.
In the 1840 Tishomingo County, Mississippi Census, M. W. BARKER is listed as follows:
1 - Male 25-30
1 - Female 30-40
2 - Males < 5
On October 12, 1841, the State of Mississippi charged M. BARKER with a misdeameanor.
In 1842 a jury finds Milo W. BARKER guilty and he is fined $15.00.
In the 1850 Tippah County, Mississippi Census, taken on September 11, 1850, #507 3rd Division we find listed:
Milo W. BARKER born in North Carolina?, listed as 36 years old.
Lucinda BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 24 years old*.

Augustus M. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 1 year old.
*NOTE: We think that Lucinda BARKER's maiden name was MURRAY.
In the 1860 Tishomingo County, Mississippi Census, our Milo W. BARKER is missing, but his family is listed as follows:
Lucinda BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 36 years old.
Benjamin M. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 13 years old.
Riley A. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 12 years old.
Augustus M. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 11 years old.
Albert C. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 9 years old.
Franklin L. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 6 years old.
Samuel B. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 4 years old.
In 1861, Tishomingo County, Mississippi buried M. BARKER in a paupers grave. It is not known if this is our Milo W. BARKER or not.
In the 1870, Lexington Township, Henderson County, Tennessee Census taken on June 25, 1870, we find listed:
Lucinda BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 52 years old.
Riley A. BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 21 years old.
Augustus M. BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 20 years old.
Albert C. BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 19 years old.
Franklin L. BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 16 yers old.
Samuel B. BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 14 years old.
One can only speculate that the line of Milo W. BARKER can be clearly traced backward from 1850 to the Milo BARKER listed as the husband of Fannie PHILLIPS, but we believe that there is a paper trail that indicates some connection. We hope that you will be able to help us make that connection!
Albert C. BARKER was the son of Milo W. BARKER and either the son of Fannie PHILLIPS or Lucinda MURRAY. We believe she was Lucinda MURRAY BARKER. According to the census quoted above, and others to be presented here, Albert C. BARKER was born in June of 1836. Since the census can only be used as a guide here, we are uncertain if he was born in Mississippi or Tennessee depending on which census you read. Albert C. BARKER married Sarah F. BOTTS in Lee County, Mississippi on December 13, 1871. The bond was put up by Albert BARKER and Isaac STACEY. The following census will give you a better understanding of the family they raised together.
The 1880 Ittawamba County, Mississippi Census, taken on June 22, 1880, Supr. #1, Enumerator #72, shows:
Albert C. BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 28 years old.
Sallie BARKER born in Tennessee, listed as 23 years old.
Nancy Eller BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 8 years old. On her death certificate, it indicated her mother's name was Surrey STACEY. Since Isaac STACEY helped put up the marriage bond for Albert C. BARKER and Sarah BOTTS, I feel there may be a connection by marriage or some kind of union between Albert Charles BARKER and Isaac STACEY.
Riley BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 4 years old.
Minnie Lee BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 2 years old.
Elizabeth BARKER born in Mississippi, listed as 6 months old.
The 1900 Prentis County, Mississippi Census taken on June 1, 1900, Enum. #98, West 1/2, Beat 3, Supr. Dist #1, as follows:
