THE BRYANS OF LEAKE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI
JOHN WESLEY BRYAN
John Wesley BRYAN was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky in 1813. At the present time we are searching for his parents and siblings. We have a photo of him, and on the back side of the photo was written "John Wesley Bryan, 1813, Hopkins County, Kentucky." At the age of twenty-six John Wesley BRYAN married nineteen year old Mary Jane McCARTY. A record of the marriage has not been found at this time. John and Mary had four children while living in Alabama. The 1850 census of Leake County, MS shows four children were
born in Alabama. Not much is known of their life in Alabama except for the following deeds found in Alabama records. John W. Bryan cash entry sale Nov. 16, 1830, 80.15 acres, Cahaba Co.; Mary Bryan cash entry sale March 20, 1837, 79.78, Demopolis Co. John Bryan cash entry sale April 1, 1837, 80.08 Acres in Montgomery County. John Wesley Bryan's wife, Mary Jane McCarty, was the youngest child of Jacob McCarty, Jr. I have a copy of a deed signed by JW Bryan, wife Mary J. Bryan and her siblings William H., Isabella, Daniel W., and Hayward S. McCarty, heirs of Jacob McCarty for the sale of approprixamately eighty acres of land in Marengo County, AL, to Thomas J. Torbert. The Deed was dated January 1849. John and Mary had four children while living in Alabama: Franklin J. BRYAN b. in 1840; Mary M. BRYAN b. in 1842; Thomas A. BRYAN b. in 1846, and Rilla A. BRYAN b. in 1848. In 1849, the family of John Wesley BRYAN moved to Leake County, Mississippi and settled near Freetrade and Madden. In 1850, Daniel Cellies BRYAN was born, followed by John Wesley BRYAN, Jr. in 1852, Martha J. "Mattie" BRYAN b. in 1854, and William H. "BILLY" BRYAN was b. in 1856. We don't know exactly when
Mary Jane MCCARTY BRYAN died, but it would have to be after the birth of Billy, and before the 1860 census. Another hidden fact is that John Wesley BRYAN married a second time to Irene Lou WRIGHT, but we don't know when. Irene was from Alabama and approximately 27 years old when she married John. John Wesley BRYAN continued to live in Leake County, MS, and to that union were born Albert BRYAN, Lawson BRYAN, Aldora BRYAN, Erdell BRYAN, and Rufus BRYAN In 1871, at the age of fifty-eight, John Wesley BRYAN and his family left Mississippi and moved to Texas where they settled in a community called Laneville.

DANIEL CELLIES BRYAN
Daniel Cellies BRYAN was born in 1850 in Madden, Leake County, Mississippi. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Wright Springs Cemetery, near Madden. Daniel Cellies BRYAN is the only child of John Wesley BRYAN who remained in Leake County when the rest of the family moved to Texas. He married and raised his family near the place his father settled between Freetrade and Madden. He was only twenty-one when his family left, and his wife had just given birth to their first child. They named him after his father John Wesley BRYAN. He first married . She died in 1877 and is buried in Zion Cemetery. It is said that she was a full blood Indian, and possibly from the Chickasaw tribe. Dan and Tennessee had three children: John Wesley BRYAN born in 1871, Mary Magdaline BRYAN born July 22, 1873, and James Almon BRYAN born August 28, 1874. John Wesley BRYAN II was called Wesley, and he followed the family to Texas where he lived most of his life. He returned to Leake County and lived near his dad's home place before he died. Mary BRYAN also moved to Texas. She married Ollie BARBER and they made their home near Canton, Texas. They raised nine children: Lonnie, Smith, Connie, Clifford, Marvin, Cecil, Melvin, Lola, and Girdy. The third child of Dan, and Tennessee BRYAN was James Almon BRYAN. He was known as "Almon". He stayed in Leake County, married Alice Viola DANIELS, and they made their home near Freeny. After the death of Tennessee, Dan BRYAN married Elvira HOGUE on July 31, 1879. They remained on the original home plaace and raised seven children: Mattie, Minnie, Hardin, Ida, Daniel Odus, Annie, and Ben. Mattie BRYAN married a Moore, and they made their home in Madden. Hardin married and lived near Madden, too. Ida BRYAN married Elie KELLY and they also lived near Madden. Daniel Odus BRYAN made his home near his brother Hardin. Annie BRYAN married Alva ADAMS and they lived near Madden. Ben BRYAN lived near Madden but later moved to Louisiana.
ALMON BRYAN
Almon BRYAN was born on August 28, 1874. He married Alice Viola DANIELS and raised his family near Freeny, MS. Alice was the daughter of Henry DANIELS and Jane Quick DANIELS. They had nine children: Cora, Bertis, Stuard, Joe, Jim, Carson, a baby boy who died soon after birth, A. V., and Lena Pearl BRYAN. It is believed that Alice died in 1918. After she died, Almon married Lena Everitt SHIELDS. Almon BRYAN died on October 26, 1923. Lena continued to live in the old place for about four years, and continued to raise the younger children. When she became ill in 1927, her sister came and took her back home with her. Lena Pearl was only twelve and went to live with her sister Cora.
