The oldest of all ink are the Egyptian writting inks. Mummies dating as far back as 2500 B.C. were found wrapped in linen marked with an ink made of iron oxide. Early hieroglyphics (picture symbols) were written with inks made of soot, water, and vegetable gums.

Secret Messages

Throughout written history, hidden communications have been sent using invisible ink. One of the earliest methods used milk to write messages on paper. When the paper was dusted with soot and the soot blown off, the messages could be read.
