Basic Internet:
Nescape
Both Netscape and Internet Explorer are good but Netscape is easier to download.
Downloading:
GetRight
This handy program helps take away a lot of the frustration when downloading files. You can resume your download at a later time instead of having to start over if site server supports resume.
Winzip
Most files for downloading are compressed/zipped to save space and transfer time. Before you can do anything with it you have to decompress/unzip it. Winzip is handy in helping you to unzip and install what you have downloaded.
Tip: when you run the program, choose 'I Agree" and then select the Wizard interface (first time) - it is easier.
Communications:
Fox Mail
This is a small and reliable email program which allows for multiple accounts and has remote mail feature. A mail notifier program is included.

You can use ICQ to send messages to your friends. If they are not online, the message will be stored and delivered once they log on the next time. It can also be used to check your email and show you headers stating the sender and subject.
WillowPhone
If you want a speakerphone, you can use WillowPhone.
Supervoice Home
Want an answering machine to take calls when you are not around? Supervoice Home might be the answer. It is supposed to be able to distinguish between voice and fax calls and answer accordingly. I have not had luck with the fax part - but it will answer voice calls reliably.

Just want a simple fax machine on your computer? Mighty Fax is straightforward and easy to use.
