Major Races: Most of your standard
fantasy races, though some races are not standard
(especially trolls and dragons). Human,
Orc, Dragon, Troll, Ogre, Wyvern, Griffon, Roc,
and the like.
The Trolls: Rather different than the
standard races. Of normal intellegence (i.e. the same
normal ranges as humans, some not some bright,
some very bright). The trollish language
is very different than the human tounge
that is standard on Panthelia, and when the trolls
try to speak the "common" tongue, it ends
up in being a hybred sounding sort of thing
(Fred-speak). However, they can understand
humans speaking just fine thank you very
much.
Major Trolls:
High Chief of the Trolls: Belagar
His sons:
Randegar, Frereder (better known as "Fred")
Randegar is the older and the "heir" to
the chiefhood, though the position is more
ceremonial than anything.
The Trolls are ancient allies of the dragons,
as they live in the same mountains. However,
they hate the orcs and the ogres.
As a rule, they tend to be peaceful, but then again, they
do tend to be 8 foot tall and strong enough
to pick a tree out of the ground, so if they are
mad....look out.
Orders of Dragons:
Green: Not the "lizard" green, but more of
an emerald green. Their primary power tends
toward "life" magic (healing and the like)
though they also have attack powers and the
like.
Silver: (or "white"). Their powers
tend toward "holy" magic, both attack and healing,
though their healing powers are less than
the greens.
Blue: Ice magic.
Red: Fire magic (of course ;p)
Black: Rare. Their magic tends toward "stasis" magic (hold spells, paralysis and the like).
When the different orders interbreed, the
progeny is usually one or the other (there are no
"mixed" breeds).
Special Class:
Gold: The Dragons are great
believers in prophecy and destiny. One aspect of this is that
any dragon that is born Gold is fated to
lead the dragon clan at some point. Gold dragons
can be born of any other color, however,
they have tended to all come from one family
over the ages. Their dragonsight is
more powerful and more developed than any other,
and they also have limited prophetic
foresight.
Lifespan: The Dragons can be killed
by violence. They will also die when they give up
their will to live. Some dragons (like
Nerlana) have lived for millenia.
Mating: Dragons mate with only 1 mate
per life. If one dies early, the other remains
alone. When they mate they are joined
with them in a very tight soul-bond. Though
dragons have their human form, there has
never been a human-dragon relationship. Less
because the dragons think they are too good,
it's just that humans fail to interest them.
However, they will form very close friendships
with humans on occasion.
Important Dragons:
Nerlana: Queen of the Dragon-clan.
Ancient and wise, wounded in the Dragonwars. The
only living dragon who remembers the days
of the "dragon-soulmates".
Narlamere: (Green) Son of Nerlana.
Deceased. Died in the Dragonwars. Father of
Rhoysmere and Rhondamere.
Yarlia (Green): Wife of Narlamere.
Still alive, and rather fed up with Rhondamere's
antics.
Rhondamere (Green): Younger son of
Narlamere and Yarlia. Deceased. Was a very angry
young dragon, and lost himself in partying
and the like
Rhoysmere (Green): Older son of Narlamere
and Yarlia. Very formal and upright. His
highest goal is to live up to the memory
of his Father.
Agianna (Silver): Wife of Rhoysmere.
Vivacious and outgoing, with a constant sly
chuckle in her eyes. Very opposite
of Rhoysmere, but in this case, opposites do attact.
She is able to get him to lighten up, and
only she truly understands him.
The Dark Dragons (see the Dragonwars):
Properly known as "The Order of the Claw".
They feel that as the dragons are the most
powerful race on the planet, they should rule
things. Exiled after the Dragonwars,
they are in hiding, rarely taking their dragonforms
(easier to hide as a human).
Berefir (Red): Current leader of the
Dark Dragons. Not the most powerful dragon, but
very cunning and sneaky. Very, very
dangerous, always plotting something.
Tararia (Blue): Wife of Berefir, less patient
than her husband, wants him to take more
direct action.
Tartare (Black): First leader of the Dark Dragons. Deceased.
The Dragonwars:
285 years ago, the Order of the Claw made
it's first move in it's quest to take over the
planet. They went to destroy the royal
family. To that end, they ambushed Narlamere as
he flew. He fought bravely, but the
odds were just too great and he fell. Soon after, his
two sons Rhoysmere and Rhondamere came across
his savagely beaten corpse. This
experience changed the two greatly (Rhoys
was about 25 at the time, and Rhond around
17). Rhoysmere became obsessed with
honoring his father by living up to his memory.
He also internalized his pain and anger.
Rhondamere however, has tended to act out his
anger (thus his rebellious streak).
A brutal series of battles followed which
lasted nearly 20 years. In the end, the power of
the Order of the Claw was broken and Nerlana
defeated Tartare in single combat, but was
savagely wounded in the battle. The
order of the claw remains in exile, looking for an
opportunity. It is thought that they
are behind many of the disturbances on the planet, as
they manipulate the gullible.
In the early days, it was prophicied that
there would be 10 humans who would have the
ability to speak to the dragons without
words or mouth (empathically). To this point,
there have been 7, though it has been uncounted
ages since the Seventh came. The
forgotten sage gave each a title which said
something about the person involved.
#1 Yeregar (The Mountain Child)
A shepherd from the mountains who loved to watch
the dragons fly by (even though they terrified
his flocks). As he reached adulthood, he
found he could reach out to the dragons
in his mind. Through his contact, the Dragons
first began to walk among men.
#2: Belthina (The Sage)
He was a great seer, and he was the one
who saw and named the next 8 dragon soulmates.
#3: Rander (The King of Men)
Built a great empire, but based not on conquest, but
mutal protection and justice.
#4: Ulura: (Woman of Sorrow)
As she grew older, her children were kidnapped from
her home by people wishing her to use her
gifts to help eliminate the dragons. Her
children were saved, but she died in the
rescue.
#5: Frencin: (The Harmony of
the Soul). The most acclaimed musician ever. He was
able to express the joy of flying on the
back of a dragon into some of his most powerful
music.
#6: Haren: (The Hero of Ages)
Traveled his world doing his best to help people.
However, he always tried to keep a low profile,
so few knew of his efforts.
#7: Annerra: (Promise Cut Short).
The last of the soulmates to have come. Died young
as the result of treachery.
Yet to come:
#8 (The Wanderer)
#9 (Hope of the Ages)
#10: (Keeper of the River of Blood)
The People of Ulura
[Note, read "The Lay of Ulura" for more details]
The Fourth of the Dragonsoulmates was Ulura,
the woman of sorrows. She died in
saving her children from kidnappers.
After her death, her son and daughter went in opposite
directions.
Her son left the immediate area, and
eventually settled on Raven's Peak, a mountain far from the
Eyrie. In time, he built a castle
there, and became the Lord of the area. Over the years the
family lands became larger, and included
the river valley of the Ardanah, and actually was
as large or larger than many kingdoms.
However, technically, they were part of the Kingdom of
Terenheim. In reality, the Capital is far
away, and so long as the tax money is sent in, the Kingdom isn't
really an issue.
The same family ruled over Castle
of Ravenspeak until recently, when the last decendent, Count Michael
was deposed by Count Artur Elingheim, who
had been his mage-advisor. Michael is gone, presumed
to be in exile, though no one in the whole
area is really sure.
Traditionally, the Counts were called
not only count, but also given the title "Uluras'son", as a memory of their
descent from the woman of sorrows.
However, with the deposing of Michael, and the end of the line of Ulura
the dragons of the Eyrie and the Ulurakith
(see next entry) insisted that the new Count remove that from
his title.
The Ulurakith
These are the people more commonly
known as the "Amazon" tribe, of the 3 allied people (the Dragons,
the trolls and the Ulurakith). They are
decended from Ulura's daughter. They remained in the area of the
Eyrie,
actually living in it's shadow across the
ages. This is a very heavily matriarchial society, ruled by the Queens
of the Ulurakith, decended from Ulura herself.
Over the ages, this society has stagnated,
remaining a small village people. More seriously though, they have
stagnated in an almost obsessive focus on
physical strength. Always a traditional people, this obsession
has pushed them to value physical strength
above almost everything else. Any change from the way things
always have been is looked upon with suspicion
by many. The two most recent queens, Adalain, and Alelneia
have begun to change this, but it is not
always an easy task.
While the Ulurakith do not put great
store in titles in day to day life, they do retain the ancient titles for
their
formal ceremonies. They have a monthly
celebration, where the tribe gathers to hear the lore of the tribe, as
well as to annoint any girls who have passed
their trials and are ready to ascend to womanhood. Other than in
formal ceremony, titles are not used, just
names. However, all of the female members of the tribe who have passed
their trials hold the title of Ulurakith In addition, the Queen hold
the title Majeri, so the current ruler is Alelneia Ulurakith Majeri.
Important Ulurakith:
Alelneia: Current Queen of the Amazons,
recently elevated into the position as a result of the death of her aunt,
Adalain. [Note: see the 3 story arc starting with "What Price Strength"]
Lessa Windstraven: General of the Armies, and Regent of the tribe those times that Alelneia is on her travels.
Bajornig: Childhood friend of Alelneia, and now current leader of the extreme traditionalist party of the Ulurakith.
The Guild of Mages:
This consists of many of the mages
of Panthelia (other than the mage-smiths). Honestly, they are not
all
that highly organized, and the guild serves
more as a way for them to keep in touch with one another
and to spy on one another, than to advance
their cause. Traditionally, a member of this Guild is called "Mage"
as a title before his name.
The Guild of Mage-Smiths
As the title implies, this consists
of those smiths (mostly blacksmith, but also any other metal smith) who
are
also mages. Generally, these are the people
who create swords of power, and the like. However, mostly, they
work as ordinary smiths, fixing plows, shoeing
horses, or serving as armorers for the army. Their guild is
far more organized, providing a number of
services, from training and assistance, to keeping track of where a young
smith can find a region where a smith is
needed. Though it is small and less prestigious, it is probably far
more
effective than the Guild of Mages.
Members of this guild do not use any title, and often those they work with
have
no idea they are anything but a normal smith.
