Etymology Adventures




Lesson Objectives:

1. Students will be able to access specific Internet sites easily.
2. Students will demonstrate an ability to research word etymology using the Internet. By the lesson's end, the students will produce a list of three words along with their origin.
3. Students will be able to use forms on the Internet. To demostrate proficiency in this area, the students will write and publish etymology question on the site Where's THAT From?
4. Students will practice reading and following instructions.




Someone invented every word you know. Etymology is the study of where words come from. To learn more about word origins, follow the steps below:


1. Go to Mrs. G's English Links at https://www.angelfire.com/ok/freshenglish/newlinks.ht ml.

2. Scroll down to Vocabulary. Click on Where's THAT From?

3. Scroll down until you see a multiple choice question. Use your dictionary to answer the question. Click on submit.

4. Answer all ten questions. If the word in question is not in your dictionary, make your best guess. When you are through, record your score here______________.

5. Return to Mrs. G's English Links.

6. Scroll down to Vocabulary.

7. Click on Archives of Word Etymology.

8. At this site you will find a long list of words. Scan the list. Choose three interesting words, click on each, and copy down the word history for each on the back of this paper. After each word history, write down the source from which this word history came. You will find this information in small print after each word history.

9. Read each word history, and choose the one you think is the most interesting. Then complete the following information.

10. Chosen word___________________________

Question concerning that word:




Four possible answers for the question (note the fake answers should sound believable and should be kept clean): a. the true answer




b. a fake answer





c. another fake answer




d. the third fake answer




Record here the source from which the word history came. You will find this information in the small print after the word history.




11. When you have completed the above step, please conference with me for editorial approval.

12. Return to Mrs. G's English Links.

13. Click on Where's THAT From?

14. Take the quiz again. Record your score here_______________.

15. Click on Submit Your Own Question.

16. Enter the information you created earlier this week in the spaces provided. When finished, click Click Da Button.
