Important Facts about Food Allergy
- Exposure to even tiny amounts of allergenic
food--as little as 1/5000 of a teaspoon--can cause a
fatal reaction. This is especially true for peanut
products.
- Of the children who have died from their food
allergies, the adult in charge did not react
immediately at the first sign of a reaction. If you
suspect a reaction, act immediately by calling 911
and administering 1 Epipen, 2 teaspoons Benedryl, and
Prelone according to bottle directions.
- Signs of a possible allergic reaction include one
or more of the follwing symptoms: skin rashes or
redness, coughing, wheezing, excessive sneezing,
vomiting, nausea, loose stools, fainting,
paleness.
- Peanuts can hide in seemingly safe products. For
example, most chocolate candy contains traces of
peanuts. Plain M&M's contain peanuts.
We can successfully manage his food allergies
by making a few adjustments to your school
routine.
1. No peanut products should ever be allowed in the
classroom.
2. Children returning from lunch should always wash
their hands and faces to remove traces of peanut
products.
3. If you have food you wish to give to the
children, I must always read the ingredient list
before Zachary eats it. If you are having a food
related activity, let me know and I will supply
something for him to eat.
4. Both and sent home a
letter to the parents explaining
his problem. Parents are very good about
sending non-peanut containing snacks after reading
that letter. I believe has a copy of
the letter.
5. Because the water fountains might have peanut
residue on them, I send a water bottle for him to
drink from.
6. To make lunch easier for you and safer for
him, I pick him up and take him home. I return
him to the playground at 11:25.
7. We need a foolproof plan for educating substitue
teachers about his food allergies. Perhaps we
could leave food allergy information in your sub
folder.
Thank you so much for accepting him into your
class this late in the semester. We know how much
extra work each additional child brings, and we know
his allergies cause even more effort and
adjustment. I am anxious to assist you in anything
you need. Because I teach part-time in the
afternoons at the high school, I am available to help
you any morning that you need me. Joe is available
during his plan from 2:00 to 3:10 if you need help
supervising a party during that time.
If you note anything I can do to help him adjust
to his new class, please let me know. Thanks so
much!
