Introduction to the Internet

The Internet provides an outstanding resource for writers. Writers, therefore, will benefit from learning to use the Internet. Today's exercises introduce you to the basic Internet principles--everything from turning your computer on to finding clickable text to discovering search engines.

Internet Use Guidelines

Please observe the following rules:

1. Please remain quiet during these exercises.
2. Work at your own pace. As you complete one exercise, move quickly and quietly to the next exercise. If you have questions, please raise your hand, and I will get to you as soon as possible.
3. Please visit only those sites which are specified below. Anyone who visits any other site will lose Internet privileges in my class for the rest of the semester. If you accidently end up in an unspecified site, raise your hand immediately, and I will help you back out of it.
4. Please treat the computers and other equipment with respect.

I have read and understand the above guidelines. I understand that my violation of any of the above guidelines can result in temporary or permanet loss of Internet Privileges in this class.

Exercises

1. Turn that machine on.
You must push two buttons: one on the monitor (the TV screen) and one on the CPU (the box beside the TV screen). Wait a few minutes until the computer completely loads. When the little hour glass disappears and does not come back on, your computer has loaded.

2. Getting On-Line
Once your computer loads, you will see a blue screen with a bunch of little pictures called icons. Look for the icon that says Internet. Grab your little mouse, move the on-screen arrow (called the cursor) until it points to the Internet icon, and click the left mouse button quickly twice. Once again, you must wait until the Internet completely loads. Wait until the little hourglass disappears permenantly.

3. Using the Address Bar
At the top of your screen, you will see the word Address with a long white bar beside it. If you do not see this, please raise your hand, and I will help you. Move your cursor using your mouse until it points to the last letter inside the white bar. Click. The letters in the white box should now have a blue box around them. Now push your backspace button until you have erased all of the letters. Then type in the following address: https://www.angelfire.com/ok/freshenglish/index.html. You must type this address exactly--include all . and /. Spelling really counts here. Then push return. If my site does not appear, you must erase the address and type it in again correctly.

5. Using Clickable Text
Some of the writing and pictures on this page is called clickable text. If you point your cursor at something clickable and click, your cursor will turn into a hand. Click on your left mouse button. Look! You are somewhere new! By clicking on this text you were magically transported to a new place! But, wait! How do you get back to Mrs. G's? At the top left corner of your screen is an arrow with the word back under it. Click on this arrow. Hey! Now you are back. Cool, huh?

6. Learning to Print
Scroll down on Mrs. G's page until you see clickable link which says Lessons. Click on this. Now you will see a list of adventures. Click on Net Adventures. Now you will see a list of exercises. Click on The Rest of Your Assignment. When this page loads, look for the picture of the printer at the top of your screen. Click on this printer. A square screen will pop up. Click on OK. Get out of your seat and walk to the printer in the corner of the room. Soon The Rest of Your Assignment will come out of the printer. Return to your seat and complete this assignment.
