U. S. Naval Sea Cadet Program

The U. S. Naval Sea Cadet program is designed for males and females, ages 11-18, whose objectives are to develop interests and skills in basic seamanship and in its naval adaption. The program teaches cadets not only seagoing skills, but patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues.

U. S. Naval Sea Cadets may train aboard Navy and Coast Guard ships and inshore activities. Cadets are authorized to wear Navy uniforms designating the Sea Cadet Corps insignia. Those between the ages of 11-13 may join the program as League Cadets, advancing at the age of 13 into the Sea Cadet program.

Four cadets from the U.S.S. United States Division recently completed two weeks of specialized training with the U.S. Coast Guard in St. Ignace, Michigan. Cadets Cheyenne Clemons, Courtney Clemons, Pam Burnam and Teresa Furmanski trained onsite with the staff of the St. Ignace Coast Guard station. During that time, they participated in towing and boat handeling, search and rescue, maintenance to navigational aids, removal of navigational hazards, firefighting, and dewatering techniques.

On August 7, 1997, the cadets were on board with the St. Ignace Coast Guard in the attempts to rescue Daniel Doyle, a maintenance employee who fell from the Mackinac Bridge. The search was called off Thursday night because of rough water before continuing at 8 a.m. Friday. Doyle's body was found by divers about noon in 95 feet of water near the southern side of the bridge while the cadets were helping to keep the area clear of boaters.

All four cadets were awarded "Cadet Citations" for their efforts in the search and rescue attempts by their commanding officer, John Greathouse, U.S.S. United States Division.
