The Beginning. . .
My throat was frozen.
I turned to glance behind me and tripped over the curb on the side of the road. He was gaining speed.
I can't let him catch up to me! I screamed in my head, scrambling to my feet and turning the corner.
Don't think, just run. If I think, then my body will freeze along with my throat and then I'll be in trouble.
As I turned the corner, I half expected to see a back road onto Cherry Street. I couldn't get anymore wrong. There, standing in front of me like the Wall of China, was a fence. A big fence. A big fence with barbed wire at the top.
I was dead.
I heard a voice behind me and spun around. Right there, hardly inches away from my face, I saw my reflection in the sunglasses of the man with the gun. He started laughing, louder and louder until his voice was booming off of the building walls on either side of me. I felt like they were closing in, crushing me.
The man abruptly stopped laughing and started shaking me by the shoulders. My head jerked back from the force of his shake.
What was I gonna do??
