Chapter Two: Book Two

I opened up the cabinet above the counter and peered inside. After finding nothing appealing, I shut it again.
"There's absolutely nothing to eat in this house. I want ice cream!" I yelled at Aria, who was sitting on a stool at the kitchen table. She had changed when we arrived home from the bowling alley because Zac had spilled his soda all over her white shirt. She was now snuggling up in sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
Aria stared. "Girl, the ice cream would be in the freezer, not the cabinet."
I looked at her blankly for a moment, and the walked over to the fridge and grabbed some "Cookie Dough" ice cream. Walking over to the sink, I snatched two serving spoons and flopped down next to my friend.
As I ripped the top off of the ice cream, I splattered somewhat melted goo onto my shirt. I muttered some incoherent swearing and stomped over to get a napkin, wiping at the stain fiercely.
Aria, concern written all over her face, spoke gently. "Is something wrong Libby? You seem kinda... upset."
My head shot up and I glared at her. "Nothing's wrong! Why are you on my back about everything? My GOD, you can respect some people's privacy you know!" I flung the napkin into the near-by trash can and stormed off into the living room.
Aria followed hesitantly, sitting in the chair that Tay had sat in only a couple of hours before.
I plopped onto the couch, hands crossed over my chest and pouting severely.
"I'm not gonna pry, Lib," Aria started slowly. "But you should know by now that if something is bothering you, I always have an ear open."
I slowly looked up at my friend, debating whether I should pour my heart out on her. What happens if SHE has feelings for Taylor? I asked myself. Maybe she just never wanted to tell me, so she kept it to herself. If that were true, telling her this would break her heart.
No, I thought. I can't tell her.
So I wouldn't feel guilty for keeping a secret from my best friend, I grasped for some lie to tell her.
"I. . .um, was just thinking about how LaserQuest wasn't open today. I really wanted to go." I kicked myself mentally. Out of all the lies in the world, you couldn't come up with something better than THAT? I scolded myself.
Aria, looking somewhat disappointed, as though she was hoping to hear a tear-jerking confession, nodded. "Ok." was all she said.
Trying to change the subject I asked her if she would like to spend the night.
"Sure, why not. Lemme call my 'rents," she replied, walking over and picking up the receiver.
As heard Aria begging her mother to stay, the doorbell rang.
For some unknown reason, I knew it was Taylor before I even reached the door.
"Hey," he said warmly.
I had a hard time lifting my gaze to his. How come such a small statement could change the way you look at a person forever? "Taylor likes you." It echoed off the walls in my mind.
I literally shook my head, trying to rid the haunting voice.
"Hey?" Taylor repeated.
"Sorry, I thought I was going to sneeze," I lied.
I motioned for him to come in, still looking at his shoes rather than his face. Aria was off the phone and walking to the door. Tay greeted her and then she left, claiming to get her stuff.
Was it just me or did Aria have a twinkle in her eye when Taylor smiled at her?
