Refers to the eternally interacting female(yin) and the male(yang) principles of the universe in Chinese philosophy and religion; symbolising all pairs of complementary opposites forever shifting one into the other in a state of perpectual dynamic balance. Lamaist sect depict this principle as human figures engage in sexual congress; the better known Taoist image is of a circle bisected by a sine curve; the yin segment is dark; the yang, light. In each segment the opposite principle is depict as a small circle, dark in the yang, light in the yin. This also symbolises the cosmic egg. The yin always comes first, representing primordial darkness before the yang light of creation. The yin is the primal cosmic ocean; passive, feminine, instinctual; the deep nourishing earth. The yang is the sky, the mountains, the dry light, air and fire, all solar animals and birds. Fabulous beasts like the dragon or pheonix symbolise the interaction of the two.
