DX LISTENING DIGEST 0-164, December 24, 2000 edited by Glenn Hauser, wghauser@hotmail.com {Items from DXLD may be reproduced and re-reproduced only if full credit be maintained at all stages and we be provided exchange copies. DXLD may not be reposted in its entirety without permission. For restrixions and searchable 2000 archive contents see} http://www.angelfire.com/ok/worldofradio/Dxldmid.html ** BRAZIL. 4925 - R. Difusora, Taubaté, São Paulo, follow-up to previous report of reactivated station: I was well treated in a phone call to the station by José da Silva Filho, better known as 'Tom Mix'. He informed me that the station returned to the tropical bands on Saturday Dec 9. For the time being it is running half power, testing. He also said their return was delayed by the bureaucracy at ANATEL in Brasília. In the future the station plans to produce programming especially for the tropical bands. The director is Emílio Amadei Berings, to whom reception reports should be sent. Address is: Rua Dr. Souza Alves, 960, Centro, 12.020-030 - Taubaté - SP Brasil. Telefone e fax: 0 xx 12 232.8122. Later: I received confirmation in only 5 days for a report sent by fax from 0 xx 12 232-8565, answered by Diretor Superintendente Emilio Amadei Beringhs [sic] Neto. I received a personal letter, stickers, pens, keyrings and rulers (Célio Romais, radioescutas, translated by gh for DXLD) **CANADA. CHWO [740] is being heard here in Canton, Ohio all day long with good signal strength on my ICF-2010, some moderate co-channel interference late evenings from unidentified station. Is their pattern non-directional as I`ve heard or is there some beaming towards the south? I'm used to hearing Toronto stations at night but not with this strength in the daytime. Thanks! (Ron Luyster, Dec 23, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Should be non-direxional, same as CBL was. Do you recall how reception of it was last winter? With the sun at it lowest this time of year, you may be getting some skywave even in the daytime (gh, DXLD) ** CANADA. 740 CHWO Oakville, ON Dec 18-23. After several weeks of testing with only open carrier, have been testing nonstop this entire week with a motley variety of nostalgia and Big Band tunes, some Christmas songs, as well as some 50s oldies. Voice announcements such as: ``Prime Time AM 740 is now test broadcasting in order to bring you the best music ever made, from Glenn Miller and Perry Como, to Anne Murray, Dionne Warwick and Céline Dion. Premiering Monday, January 8th, this is Prime Time Radio, AM 740`` (Mike Brooker, Ont., hard-core-dx via DXLD) ** CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC. Unidentified 5900 Around 0100 to 0200 always just above threshold. Possible flute IS at 0100, but couldn`t make out anything else. Regularly heard daily. Always wiped out later by Radio Bulgaria`s Russian service which is often at good levels. Could this be Central African Republic`s Radio Ndeke-Luka? (Walt Salmaniw, 21 Dec, Queen Charlotte Is, BC, DX LISTENING DIGEST) Walt, We`ve been hearing N`delke on 5900 during November and early December off the back end of the SW wire at Graylands [WA coastal DXpedition site]. Likely this is the one you are hearing now! (Don Nelson, Oregon, swbc@topica.com via DXLD) ** CHINA. Apparently CNR-1 left 7935 approx. on Dec 20. Their new schedule instead of 7935: 7275 2000-0130 (or 0100?), 11835 0130(or 0100?)-1130, 7275 1130-1735. Goodbye, 7935! Merry Christmas! (Mikhail Timofeyev, hard-core-dx Dec 24 via DXLD) ** GREECE [non]. VOG via Delano (?) to Au new 11900 finally audible here UT Dec 23 at 0600, weak and fluttery \\ 7475 Greek music direct from Greece (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** JAPAN. Special Program of Radio Japan "20th century of the International Broadcasts" will be broadcast in the all languages of Radio Japan's Regional Service except English and Japanese on December 25 and 26. The 2 day program consists valuable interview and recording tapes. This program is "not" on the air in the General Service (Toru Yamashita, Japan, Asian Broadcasting Institute http://www.246.ne.jp/~abi/ Dec 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** MALAWI. Another missing African, even on Xmas eve, is 3380, not heard around 1800 UT Dec 24 (Chris Hambly, Victoria, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** OKLAHOMA. Both Bob Foxworth and Eric Bueneman suggest that KMKZ could be a Disney-in-waiting, as R. Disney calls often have some connexion with ``Mickey``! But we now recall the letters originally applied to 95.7 in a lame attempt to spell mix as in ``Mix 96``. The 1640 CP in Enid is now on its third set of call letters without even going on the air, and we would not be surprised if it ultimately becomes KCRC, which, after all, was the original 1390 station the expanded band frequency was supposed to improve (Glenn Hauser, Oklahoma Broadcasting News via DXLD) ** RUSSIA. Glenn, happy holidays and my best wishes for health and luck in the new year, keep up your excellent work! Last night I found 7125 back on regular schedule with Russian 0200- 0400, no longer replaced 0300-0400 by English. 7180 was very weak here, certainly not co-located with 7125 which I guess still originates from the Tbilisskaya site, substituting for Grigoriopol` (Kai Ludwig, Germany, Dec 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** RUSSIA. Gorbachev becomes owner of Radio-1 | Excerpt from report by Russian Ren TV on 15 December The USSR president, Mikhail Gorbachev, has become a media tycoon. He now owns Radio-1 - a new All-Russia radio station that will be funded by the Gorbachev Fund... [Gorbachev] We shall make this channel a national one. The channel is intended for Moscow and Moscow Region and slightly touches on Vladimir, Tver and Smolensk [Regions]. But we have plans to make it a national radio station. [Diana Berlin, Radio-1 general producer] The station will not be politicized. Mikhail Sergeyevich [Gorbachev] has no such intention. This will be a family channel broadcasting many cultural programmes. There will be a music rubric that will broadcast hits of all generations. [Correspondent] Gorbachev said that he does not intend to use his role as a media owner as a means of advancing his own interests. This is an attempt to restructure radio. It is an experiment of sorts... Source: Ren TV, Moscow, in Russian 1130 gmt 15 Dec 00 (via BBC Monitoring via DXLD) * THAILAND. The short path from Tampa to BKK is about 355 degrees according to my wm7d eq-az map. I would think this would want to arrive over the N pole since the entire N pole region is in darkness this time of year. Maybe a skewed path around the edge of the S pole, along the greyline is possible. The long path from BKK to here crosses Palmer Peninsula, Tierra del Fuego, for what it`s worth (oops, meant to say FWIW) if you consider just a straight path, but it`s in daylight 24h now in the Antarctic part of the trip. I think Glenn is right, you EC guys further north should be working this possibility, and for DXers in the Seattle-Vancouver areas and north, in the Pacific Northwest, there are many documented 75 and 80- meter ham contacts from that area to northern Europe around 1500Z just at sunrise in Seattle, at this time of year, and I think TA reception along that greyline path should be possible, as I have already mentioned in the IRCA group. I think Pat Martin may be a bit too far south to pick this up however. Nick Hall Patch reported a peak on 1314 kHz one day at just the right time recently on his automatic signal strength logger device - tantalizing. As for me, it`s just too noisy around here in my townhouse and I am too lazy to try a field expedition at that time of day to work 1575. 73 (Bob Foxworth, FL, NRC-AM via DXLD) ** U S A. Dear Glenn, Fred Flintstone is back on 7415 WBCQ, Saturdays, 7:30-8 pm Eastern. Rock and roll on shortwave-you bet. Seasons best, (Allan Weiner, WBCQ, Dec 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) UT Sunday 0030-0100 - hmm, don`t forget what`s on the other WBCQ then (gh) ** U S A. The only programs worth listening to on WRMI (disregarding 9955, buried in jamming): Viva Miami, in English, Fri 2200-2215 on 15725, UT Mon 0445-0500 on 7385. AWR Wavescan, UT Fri 0515 and UT Mon 0530 on 7385. This Lousy Half Hour Show, UT Sun AND Mon 0430-0500 on 7385; Scream of the Butterfly, UT Sun 0500-0600 on 7385; Seldom Heard Radio, UT Saturday 0600-0630 on 7385 after first and third Fridays; Mi Seferino, UT Sat 0600-0630 on 7385 after 2nd, 4th, 5th Fridays (gh excerpted from Dec 9 revision of WRMI sked via Mike Terry, BDXC-UK via DXLD) ** U S A. Subject: LPFM CP The FCC. LPFM did incorporate the new Grams bill. CPs can be granted any time after 1/22/01 if there are no petitions to deny. Since NAB got what it wanted, it probably will not object. So, expect a long list of CPs in early February with sign ons starting immediately. So, will the Digest and the Atlas list these new CPs / stations? (John Broomall, GA, John@ChristianCommunityFM.com WTFDA via DXLD) ** U S A. Re DXLD 0-163: No, WPHT doesn`t webcast. They`re the former WCAU, longtime CBS owned station. As you may know, all CBS stations are now Infinity stations. Infinity and CBS have the same owners. Infinity doesn`t webcast any of their stations unless their contractual arrangements (e.g. Major League Baseball and the Phillies on WPHT; NFL and the NY Giants on WFAN) require them to. Seasonal salutations (Richard Cuff, PA, DX LISTENING DIGEST) [1210 AM] ** U S A. The more things change... From the Friday, December 22, 2000 edition of the M Street Daily. CBS Radio Networks will change the CBS news sounder (opening jingle) at 12 noon Eastern time on Tuesday, December 26. The tune will be the same, but the instrumentation will be different (Brock Whaley, GA, Dec 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A. WSM-AM, Nashville, has been playing occasional brief excerpts from old broadcasts this year as part of the station`s anniversary. The station is now promoting a 14-hour marathon "WSM Remembers" on New Year`s Day, beginning at 10 am CST (Mike Cooper, Atlanta GA, Dec 24, DX LISTENING DIGEST) ** U S A.
