Santiago, Chile - Monumental Theater August 7, 1997 Solid rock night protagonizes the neo punk band Offspring After an enthusiastic competition, the group from California come to Chile to show their fourth album Ixnay On The Hombre It wasn't clear if that night at Monumental Theater were all the fans from the neo punk band Offspring, but the ones who watched the concert, sure were. Almost two thousand of spectators arrived at the venue on the day before the concert, leaving the back part of the venue empty. Neverthless, the screams and shouts of the crowd turned it into a small detail for the band. But the show started a little before. By 20:30, came the group from Villa Alemana LaFloripondio, for the opening act. They palyed a half-hour set that gave them the respect from the public who follow them with energy, even when the public was really expecting the Offspring. The Chilean band ended their set with "Pier No Doy Una" and "Manyagua," new songs with convincing power. A few minutes after 9 PM, came the band of the new North American punk. Bad Habit was their first song, played for a very excited public, that jumped and striked themselves in mosh-pits in the tradicional style of the pogo dance. The singer Dexter Holland, the guitarrist Noodles, the bassist Greg K and the drummer Ron Welty played for more than an hour, with an excellent sound quality and a solid repertoire. With a proposal not so crude, like it's suposed to be their punk reference, the Offspring played a few old songs, but mostly, songs from "Ixnay On The Hombre," their fourth album and the reason of the tour. With simple staging and with a few touches of humor, like an intermission where the band relaxed for a while the assistants shared drinks with the crowd, break a serious performance. Some tributes with irony of Black Sabath and Metallica, and the interpretations of "All I Want," "What Happened To You," and "Self Esteem" created moments of real ecstasy in Monumental Theater. After this last song, the band left the stage for the first time, backing up with three new songs, including one cover from Nirvana. At 22:40, the band left the stage definitivelly. After the concert, the same assistants throwed CDs to the crowd, that were disputed with strikes and blows, as real trophies. A night full of rock, solid and with an energy that ratifies the power of the proposal of Offspring. From Chilean press |
