Back to the studio

July 16, 1998: The Offspring are back to the studio to record their fifth album. Dave Jerden will be the producer (the same who produced "Ixnay On The Hombre"). After loaded everything on July 1st and 2nd, they started recording on July 6th.

Singer Dexter Holland told SonicNet: "We're only recording 12 songs. We demoed 17, but if we weren't sure a song was going to be on record, we just cut it for now." According to him, the songs are shaping up to be mostly high-velocity punk tunes with a few odd choices thrown in.

Among these oddities the band is doing, there's a cover of "Feelings" (1977) from Morris Albert. "It's got that 'woh-woh' part, it's totally Orange County punk," Holland said.

Another surprise might be the Brian Setzer Orchestra leader participation on the next album. "There was something I wanted to work on and it sounded a little bit different for us. I wanted some horns, so I called up Brian Setzer and he was totally into collaborating on the song. It doesn't really sound like an Offspring song, but it was something I was interested in trying."

Should the Offspring finish their album early, there's a chance that they may record a few cover songs or additional tracks, Holland said. The record should be out by the end of the year.
