ABU DHABI POSTAL HISTORY

BRITISH POSTAL ADMINISTRATION
(30 March 1963 (Das Island on 1 December 1960) to 31 December 1966)

1955-60. (Waterlow ptgs) (Watermarked St. Edward’s Crown and E 2 R Multiple).

2r. on 2s. 6d. Black-brown.

(Type I) (23.9.55). On Waterlow ptg. Top of “R” level with top of “2” and other letters of “RUPEES”. Bars 7 mm long.
(Type II) (2.57). On Waterlow ptg. “R” dropped out of alignment with “2” and other letters of “RUPEES”. Bars 6.5 mm long.
(Type III) (No. 536a D. L. R.) (6.60). On De La Rue ptg. Top of “R” below level of top of “2”. Bars 7-7.25mm long and with left sides aligned with “S”.

Type I of "2 RUPEES"

2r on 2s 6d (Type I) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated "4 JA 64".

Type II of "2 RUPEES"

2r on 2s 6d (Type II) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated "4 JA 64".

Type III of "2 RUPEES"

2r on 2s 6d (Type III) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated "4 JA 64".

5r. on 5s. Rose-red.

(Type I) (1.3.57). On Waterlow ptg. Ends of letters square and sharp. There were two printings made in March and May 1957.
(Type II) (No. 537a D. L. R.) (27.1.60). On De La Rue ptg. Type is thicker and ends of letters are relatively rounded.

Note: The "Wide Surcharge" Row 8/1 has not been seen used from either Abu Dhabi or Das Island.

Type I of "5 RUPEES"

5r on 5s (Type I) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated "2 FE 64".

Type II of "5 RUPEES"

5r on 5s (Type II) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated "2 FE 64".

The "Wide Spaced" Row 8/4 has not been seen used from either Abu Dhabi or Das Island.

5r on 5s Row 8/4. The "5" being spaced an extra 1 mm. away from "RUPEES".

1960-61. Stamps of Queen Elizabeth II, Watermarked St. Edward’s Crown Multiple and perf. 14½x14.

5np. on 1d. Ultramarine (8.4.61).
10np. on 1½d. Green. (8.4.61).
15np. on 2½d. Carmine-red. (26.4.60).
20np. on 3d. Deep lilac. (28.11.60).
30np. on 4½d. Chestnut. (8.4.61).
40np. on 6d. Deep claret. (28.11.60).
50np. on 9d. Bronze-green. (8.4.61).
75np. on 1s. 3d. Green. (8.4.61).
1r. on 1s. 6d. Gray-blue. (8.4.61).
2r. on 2s. 6d. Black-brown. (8.4.61).
5r. on 5s. Rose-red. (8.4.61).

Note:The other low value from the above issue (1np., 3np., 6np., and 12np.) were not sold over the counter in Abu Dhabi.

1960-61. Stamps of Queen Elizabeth II Watermark Multiple Crowns surcharged in “NP” naye Paise and “RUPEES”. Issue dates: (15np (26.4.60), 20np & 40np (28.11.60) 5np, 10np, 30np, 50np, 75np, 1r, 2r, & 5r (8.4.61)).

2r on 2s 6d (No. 595) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated "2 FE 64".

No. 596

5r on 5s (No. 596) tied by "DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1" cds, dated
"2 FE 64".

The other low values from the above issue (1np., 3np., 6np., and 12np.) were not sold over the counter in Abu Dhabi.

1963 First Day Cover, franked by 1960 – 61 issue, (5np, 10np, 15np, 20np, 30np, 40np, 50np, 75np, 1r, 2r, & 5r) all tied by
“ABU DHABI TRUCIALSTATES 1” cd’s dated “30 MR 63”. The 2r is on Multi Crown Wmk (SG92), the 5r is the Waterlow ptg (SG57). The cover bore an official cachet “Introduction of Postal Services/Abu Dhabi, Trucial Coast/March 30th 1963” in Violet

1963 First Day Cover, franked by 1960 – 61 issue, (5np, 10np, 15np, 20np, 30np, 40np, 50np, 75np, 1r, 2r, & 5r) all used on airmail cover to London tied by “DAS ISLAND ABU DHABI TRUCIAL STATES 1” cd’s dated “30 MR 63”. The 2r is on Multi Crown Wmk (SG92), the 5r is the Waterlow ptg (SG57). The cover bore an official cachet “Introduction of Postal Services/Abu Dhabi, Trucial Coast/March 30th 1963” in Violet
