Chapter Fourteen
Duncan and I walked hand-in-hand into the High School parking lot. I took a deep breath,
and noticed a group of girls snickering at me,..like I had 6 heads. Duncan pulled me up the
stairs and into the guidance counselor's office.
"Don't mind those girls." he whispered to me. I smiled at him, and I focused
on a name engraved in a black marble plague on the large, organized desk in front of me.
Before I could manage to read the name someone walked into the room.
"Hello Ms. Maxwell." the woman said. Duncan cleared his throat. I shoke
him off slightly, as I took the woman's extended hand.
"It's Amanda London." I said. She shook my hand, and sat down..her eyes
glued to Duncan.
"Nice to see you here, once again Duncan." she said to him. He laughed.
"The only time I'll be here without being yelled at!" The woman laughed, as
I waited for her to turn her attention back to me. As if she read my mind, she eyeballed
me, and opened a folder that lay in front of her.
"Ms. London..I want to welcome you to Abigail High School. We take pride in
having you come here." she said. I smiled, and I tried to make out what my schedule was.
"Your schedule is like anyone else's here. You do not get a slacker schedule..because of
your grades from Tulsa, we decided you will be in the highest French class." I smiled, and
looked I Duncan.
"She's with me, right Mrs. Thelma?" he asked. Mrs. Thelma smiled.
"Yes Duncan." she paused and gazed over my schedule. "Actually, she's in all
of your classes!" she told him. I smiled, and squeezed Duncan's hand.
"I have ceramic's, and piano..right?" I ask. I made sure I took up piano,
because Taylor would love me to dead if I did. I planned to take Ceramic's because Duncan
was in it, and he said it's the easiest class I could get. Mrs. Thelma smiled.
"You have Piano next semester!" she told me. She reached over her desk,
and handed my two copies of my schedule. I took them, waisting no time. As I started to
read through the schedule, a bell rang. Duncan grabbed his backpack up off the floor.
"C'mon. We have 15 minutes to get to homeroom." he said, pulling me out of
the room. While we approached the a row of black lockers, several jocks came over.
"Hey Duncan my man! Who's the chick?" one tall blonde boy asked. Duncan
smiled, and wrapped his arms around my waist.
"She's no chick, she's my sister!" he said. We decided to go by sister and
brother..it seemed natural that way.
"Gee, thanks Duncan!" I said. He smiled and kissed my head. Pushing beside
the three jocks, Duncan pulled me too Locker number 21. My lucky number! I thought to
myself. "Your sharing a locker with me..right?" I asked him. He opened the locker, and
tossed his jacket inside.
"Yep. C'mon, hurry up." he hurried me. I pulled my over the head jacket off,
and tossed it next to his. I stood, and watched him pull a red hard cover book out, and he
showed it to me. "Drama. 2st period." he reached back into the locker. Duncan pulled two
notebooks out. "Language 1st - and French 3rd. Same teacher..plus homeroom teacher!" he
said. He placed the books in his back pack, closed the locker, and walked down the hall. I
tugged on his arm.
"Try to slow down." I said, my breath heavy. As we turned into a door on
the left, 2 girls giggled and watched my every move. I turned to Duncan. He saw them.
"Sarah, Jamie. This is my sister- Amanda!" he announced proudly. I smiled
at them, and nodded a hello. Without waiting for an answer from them, Duncan lead me
toward the back of the room. I sat down, and a young, tall man approached me.
"Ms. London?" he asked. I smiled, my cheeks flushing.
"Yes." I said. Duncan noticed my reaction to the man, and he pushed his
desk closer to mine. The man allowed Duncan to move, and he smiled down at me.
"I'm Mr. Roderickson. Nice to have you in my class." he said, and then said a
few French words. I knew them perfectly.
"Nice to meet you too. Thank you! I enjoy being apart of your class. I look
forward to it!" I said to him, but in French. He looked shock.
"You are a quick learner, huh? Amanda, you are very smart." he said, before
walking in front of the class. I blushed and turned to Duncan.
"What?" I asked., raising my hands above my head. He laughed.
"You like French?" he asked me. I noticed Duncan was very smart, and not
only popular but totally gorgeous. His brown hair fell into his eyes, and his eyes were deep.
Duncan leaned close to me. "I hope so." he whispered. A shiver ran up and down my spine.
"Duncan., we can't!" I scolded him. "I have a boyfriend, and I am your
sister!" He nodded, and still holding my hand, kissed my cheek. Like a brother to a sister. I
smiled, and we both turned toward Mr. Roderickson.
"Class..class..calm down!" he said. The class fell silent. Except for a few
girls gossiping about a dance. I watched them from the corner of my eye, and I noticed
one of them was Kristi. I tugged Duncan toward me.
"Kristi's here!" I squealed. He smiled, and looked toward Kristi.
"Hey, Kristi- c'mere!" he called to her. She looked up from her mirror, and
a large smile fell on her face.
"Duncan.." she paused. "Amanda." She came and sat next to us. I turned to
her, and felt suddenly, nervous.
"Hi." I said. Duncan looked over our faces., and he smiled.
"So Kristi, I hear you're running for the Spring Fling Queen?" he
questioned. She smiled.
"Yes I am, nice of you to notice Duncan. Thank you!" she said. Duncan
nodded and took my hands.
"You should run Mandie, it would be a great way to win popularity." he said.
Kristi bit her lip, and I chewed mine.
"Yeah right Duncan. Dream on!" I said, with a laugh. What I assumed was
the homeroom bell, rang. I looked around and everyone got up.
"First period babe." he said. Moving to another seat. I remember then that
on Monday's we had Language first.
"Right. I forgot." I said., taking a seat next to him. "Mr. Roderickson?
Would it be alright if I sat with Duncan?" I asked Mr. Roderickson. He smiled.
"Sure." he said. "Just don't chatter to loudly." I smiled. Duncan smiled too.
"We won't, Mr. R." he assured 'Mr. R.'
First period went well, and I made three friends. Alexznder Scott., Cherish
Immersion, and a cute blonde named Scottie Welks. They all sat around me. Just then the
second period bell rang. I jumped out of my seat, quite anxious to see what was going on in
Drama class. I noticed several students stayed in class, while some turned left.
"Why aren't they going to Drama?" I asked Duncan. He smiled, and put his
arm around my waist.
"Only 5 of us from homeroom are all in the same classes. Alexznder,
Scottie, me, you and Gloria." He explained to me, as we walked into a large, dim lighted
room.
"Wow!" I gasped. About 40 students were gathered in the Drama class
room. Duncan and I found front row seats next to Scottie, he saved them from us.
"I hope you all had you corn flakes!" A young, energetic voice called. Several
students mumbled excuses on why them didn't have breakfast, and the rest laughed and
giggled. I rested my hands in my lap, when a short woman walked in front of us.
"Mrs. London. So good to finally meet you!" she said. She reached for my
hand. "I'm Mrs. Georgia." she introduced herself. My face turned a double shade of pink,
and I smiled to her.
"Hello. I'm Amanda!" I said. Duncan and Scott both placed their arms
around some part of my chair. The warmth from them made my fidget in my seat, while
Mrs. Georgia talked.
"Amanda, you seem lively today. Why don't you grab a partner, and show us
how good of an actress you are. Duncan and Scott exchanged words, and I took Duncan
onto the stage.
"Um, who should I do?" I asked. Mrs. Georgia smiled.
"Romeo & Juliet. Since that is the play we will be producing this week." she
paused, and explained how the whole class has to try out for a role in the play. "..and if you
are good Amanda, I might let you be lead!" she said. My face flushed again, and Duncan & I
ran through some scenes.
"Do this one." Duncan said. I nodded, and played the scene through my
head. Even if the scene had a brief kissing scene, I didn't find any fault in it. It was just
acting, right? I memorized the line, and Duncan did too.
"Are you ready?" Mrs. Georgia called. I smiled, and nodded to Duncan. We
walked out from behind the black curtain that hung in front of us, and we stood in the
places we decided on. Duncan said his lines with poise, and ease. They flowed out like he
was Romeo himself. Soaking myself into the role, and said my line. Duncan said his reply
and he leaned forward. Our lips met, and we kissed. My hands tightly clung to his waist,
while his ran along my back.
"Eww..gross!" a boy called.
"I thought she was your sister, dude!" another boy called. I pulled from
Duncan and said my line. Duncan kissed my hand like he was suppose to, and said his line. I
said my line, and kissed his cheek, just bearly missing his lips. We stepped back, bowed,
and ran behind the curtain. Mrs. Georgia clapped enthusiastically.
"That was wonderful!" she called to us. Duncan wrapped his arms around my
waist, and I turned my face toward him.
"We did good babe!" he said. I felt a familiar feeling fall into my stomach.
"Boys, girls..I have found my Romeo and Juliet!" Mrs. Georgia announced. I
squealed.
"Oh my god!" I said. Duncan held me close, and he leaned forward, kissing
me. I turned myself around, and our bodies hugged each other tightly. As I fell into his
warmth, I remembered the way Shane kissed me. I shivered and pulled from Duncan. His
lips red, and mines burned.
"Amanda, Duncan, come out and let us congratulate you!" Mrs. Georgia
called to us. I pulled away and walked out, and back to my seat. Duncan followed close
behind. When we were both in our seats the blonde boy that had approached us this
morning, came over to us.
"Man, why'd you lie? You could have told me she was your girl. I would have
backed off!" he said. I squirmed in my seat. Duncan took my hand like he did earlier, and I
felt eased.
"She's my sister. Not really, exact sister, but she's my second cousin!" he
paused. "Gee Ardie, back off." he replied. Ardie smiled, with a laugh and went back to his
seat.
