Chapter 16

Kristi laid in her bed. The fresh smell of tears and green apple spray filled the room. I walked slowly into her doorway and knocked on the door. "Zac told me what happened." I whispered. I remembered how when Taylor and I finally got home, it had been dark for hours, and Zac was sitting like a zombie on my bed. After a few words Taylor and I got him to talk. He explained to us how Kristi freaked out about a fan coming up to them in the downtown coffee shop. Kristi had her eyes locked on her large poster of Hanson that was posted directly over her head on the ceiling. She blinked, and a few more tears fell from her eyes. "It was a reporter you know, he wasn't going to hurt you." I said. Early that morning I bought a copy of '16' Magazine, and I read an article about Kristi and Zac. All the details matched Zac's exactly. The man that Kristi attacked was a reporter and he wanted to get a few pictures, maybe even some answers to a few questions he might of had. "I know that!" Kristi shot. I winced. I didn't know why she was always biting my head of these days. "Why are you like this?" I paused. "I came here to comfort you.. but you don't seem to be in need of any comfort." I said my voice raising slowly. Kristi turned her head toward me, but her eyes still on the poster. "Comfort?" she replied, her eyes pearcing mine. "I attacked a freakin' reporter. And you come to comfort me?" she paused, turning her head back toward the ceiling. "Well Amanda, news flash.- You should have comforted me after Lorean and you didn't. Therefore as of now I don't need your comfort." Kristi fell into a small fit of tears. I stepped back a few steps. I picked up a bat that was huddled in the corner of her room, just like she had when she was living at my house. "You wanted my comfort. Huh? Huh, you know you did. And now look at you." I paused reaching for the other bat she had in the opposite corner. "Your so fuckin' paranoid you keep these damn bats at your side; no matter where you go! What do you do when were at school. Do you going to carry a knife in your pocket book? Kristi you need to get a grip on reality, and you need to hold on tight!" I screamed, throwing the bat at the bed. It flew past her body and hit the bookshelf next to her. "STOP IT!" she shrieked, sitting up. "STOP IT AMANDA, JUST STOP." I looked at her, my eyebrow raised. "Stop? I need to stop? Look at you!" I said, dropping the other bat to the floor. Before I let any tears fall I ran out of the house; knocking over several pictures of us, my family, and my friends. Also breaking two vases that had roses inside of them. Duncan walked out of the kitchen resighting his lines for Romeo and Juliet. Taylor sat in the living room. "Hey." Duncan said, sitting next to Taylor on the couch. "So, your the lead in Romeo and Juliet huh? Who's Juliet?" he asked. Duncan looked up from the script. "Amanda didn't have time to tell you, did she?" he asked. Taylor looked around the living room, his eyes falling on my script. "Amanda told me you got the lead, but she never told me she was Juliet." he paused. "That's pretty cool." Duncan looked at him, closing his script. "Yo man, don't be frustrated about the kissing scene." he said, knowing exactly what Taylor was probably thinking. Tay smiled. "No, I'm cool." he said. Inside his stomach was twisting together, and he felt like he was going to puke. "I'll drop lead if your comfortable with it." Duncan urged. He knew Taylor was alittle confused, but he knew how much Amanda liked Taylor. Tay smiled weakly and then his smile turned to a frown. "Don't drop your lead because of me." he paused, gulping. "Like I said I'm cool with it." Duncan opened his script. "Um, alright. I'm going upstairs to practice." he got up and walked out of the room. A minute later he appeared again. "Your cool man, I mean it." he said, leaving the room once again. Taylor smiled and rested his head back against the wall. "I'm cool." he whispered to himself. Zac and Isaac followed Patricia and Lacey into the soap isle at the local food store. "Boys you can go over to the mall if you want. I don't want to use up your time." Patricia laughed. "Really?" Zac asked. Patty smiled. Lacey examined a can of soup. "Go have fun boys. But call us by 8:30, because it gets really dark any time after that." she said. Isaac and Zac smiled and ran out of the store. "Which way is the mall?" Zac asked. Isaac shrugged and looked around. A minute later he pulled Zac to the right. "Down there!" he said, walking toward the mall. Zac waisted no time and broke into a run. "Where are you going?" Ike asked, running to catch up with Zac. Zac stopped and turned around. "I'm not taking my chances. If Patty comes out and changes her mind... I'll be in the mall. Shopping." he said, running once again. Isaac laughed and followed Zac toward the mall. An hour later Kristi crawled out of her bed and went outside on her back patio. "I hate Amanda!" she said to her neighbors dog that had been looking up over at her. The dog barked. "Nice to know you agree." The dog barked a few more times and Kristi laughed. As she sat down the phone rang. She shrugged it off, and looked up toward the sky. The phone rang 5 more time. "I'm coming I'm coming." she said trudging into the house. "Hello?" she asked rudely, just to let the person know they had aggravated her. "Kristi, it's so wonderful to hear your voice again. I miss you sweetheart." The person on the other line said. Kristi froze in motion. "Oh my god." she whispered softly. "Tell me it's not you..it's not you!" she said her voice shaking. The person laughed. "Did you miss me?" Lorean asked. Kristi placed her hand over her mouth. "No your not serious." she paused looking quickly around the room. "Amanda if this is your idea of a sick joke I'm not laughing!" she screamed. Lorean laughed. "Babe, I knew you missed me." he laughed. Kristi looked around, her hands shaking. "Stop it. No." she said. Her body shook as she went to the door and locked it. All three locks. "Amanda its not funny." she said into the phone. Lorean laughed again. "Amanda left a few minutes again. She looked very upset." he said, pausing for another laugh. "What did you do to her babe?" Lorean asked. Kristi realized it wasn't Amanda, and she screamed. She dropped the phone and it hung up when it hit the floor. The phone rang a few seconds later, and Kristi heard some noise coming from outside the house. She jumped and her eyes flew to the door. "GET AWAY. LEAVE ME ALONE!" she called. Bending down she picked up the phone. "Stop it." she said. The noise came closer and the breathing in the phone was heavy and dark. A hard knock came from the front door. "Answer the door." Lorean said. Kristi shook her head and Lorean knocked a few more times on the door. "ANSWER IT!" he demanded. Kristi squeezed her eyes shut and slowly unlocked the three locks. The door knob turned and Kristi froze. "Why was the door locked?" Lacey and Patricia asked. She walked into the house, her hands full with 7 grocery bags. Patricia had her hands full too. Kristi sighed and fell to the floor. "Mom!" she said. "LOCK THE DOOR." Lacey looked down at her. "What is wrong with you honey?" she asked, placing her bags down. "You looked petrified." Before Kristi could answer the phone rang. "Don't pick it up!" Kristi said, reaching for the phone. Lacey shoved her hand away. "Kristi, what has gotten into?" she said, picking up the phone. "Hello?" she asked. Kristi screamed and grabbed the phone from her mother. "LEAVE US ALONE!" she screamed into the phone, hanging up quickly after. Lacey stood shocked. Patricia stood confused. She took the phone from her daughter and dialed *69. She held the phone up to her ear and listened. "Hmm. That's funny. It was from a pay phone." she told Patricia. "Oh. I told the boys to call us if they wanted a ride home. It must have been them calling from the pay phone." she said.
