Chapter Eighteen
I brought the phone up to my ear. "Hello?" I asked. Yesterday I had gotten into a
huge fight with Kristi, so I expected it to be her calling to apologize.
"Amanda..it's Lacey." Lacey said, her voice shaken and fragile. I looked up
at Patricia and Duncan. Taylor was in the shower. Zac was using the downstairs shower,
and Isaac was out at the mall.
"Yes." I said.
"Honey. I have some news." she said solemnly into the phone. I exchanged
looks of cluelessness with Duncan.
"Yes." I repeated. Lacey sighed, and sniffled. Right then I knew she had
been crying.
"Lorean escaped from jail." she paused, and I felt like someone had just
punched me in the stomach. "He has a friend here in Atlanta... he called Kristi last night."
she said. I collapsed. Duncan reached over and held my hand.
"No..your joking. Kristi was mad..she put you up to this didn't she." I
paused, tears falling down my face. "Didn't she?!" I shrieked. Patricia shook her head, and
went upstairs to retrieve the other phone.
"No honey she didn't. He called three other times last night." Lacey said
sobbing. I heard a shrill cry in the background and I knew it was Kristi.
"Oh my god. Is he..is he..what about the cops?" I asked. I knew deep inside
myself that Lorean had come back to get her. Get her bad. "Are the cops looking for him?"
I questioned. Lacey sniffled and choked.
"Yes. But it's been 8 hours since he lasted called. Each time he found some
way of telling us he was outside the house. The cops are here. I'm using a cell phone so I
don't interfere on a incoming call." she coughed.
"Put Kristi on the phone." I said. Duncan pulled me close to him and I shoved
him away. "No." I told him. Right now I didn't fell like being held, or kissed, or even
touched. Just thinking about that night scared me, and sent chills up & down my spine.
Lacey handed the phone to Kristi.
"Help me Amanda..please." Kristi sobbed. I rested my head in my hand.
"Kristi don't. Are you alright?" I asked her. I was scared for her, and
scared for me. Just then Taylor came running down the stairs in a pair of shorts. His hair
clinging to his neck and his body wet. (sigh)[hehe]
"Are you OKay? What's going on?" he said, resting his hands on my
shoulders. I pulled away. He looked at me and waited for an explanation. Kristi coughed.
"He called yesterday. He was outside..." she trailed off. Just as she started
to speak again my phone beeped, telling me there was another call.
"Hol- hold on. I have another call." I said. Kristi begged my not to switched
over, but I didn't hear her. I handed the phone to Duncan since I didn't know how to click
to the other line. Duncan clicked to the other line and answered it.
"Hello?" he said. "Oh yeah. She's right here." he shrugged and handed the
phone to me.
"Hello?!?!?" I said. My voice cracked and weak.
"How's my baby doll?" I recognized the voice right away. I almost dropped
the phone. I turned to Taylor and gripped him tightly around the waist.
"Leave us alone Lorean. Leave us alone! Please, please?" I begged, I could
taste my tears as I talked. Taylor held me close and waited.
"Hold Blondie close Amanda. He might just make this nightmare go away."
Lorean laughed. My body shook and I covered the receiver with my hand.
"He's outside." I mouthed.
"That's right." Lorean said. "I'm outside." Duncan and Taylor looked at each
other, and then searched the room with their eyes.
"Stop. Please stop." I begged. Suddenly I heard a crackling noise and the
phone went dead. I tried clicking back to Kristi but it didn't work. "The phone's dead."
While I stood up to hug Taylor the lights in the house flickered once and then went
off. I saw Duncan's shadow against the black room. He tried every light switch in the
room. Patricia let out a loud scream, and Zac screamed too. His voice deep and shaken.
After a second I heard the wooden floor crack. Just like it usually did when someone ran
across it. I heard the doorknob turn, and the door opened from downstairs causing me to
jump. "Oh god,...Taylor." I whispered clinging to him. A figure arose in front of me, and I
felt his breath against my face.
"What happened guys?" Zac asked. I sighed, so did Taylor and Duncan.
"Zac,..it's Lorean." Taylor said, wrapping his arms around my back. Zac
shivered and little droplets of water fell onto my face. Quickly drying with the heat of my
body.
"Kristi." Zac whispered. "Where's Kristi?" Duncan walked close, his hand
touching Zac's shoulder. I blinked twice and I could see everyone's figure's in the
darkness.
"Zac..oh god Zac." I said, nothing being able to come from my mouth. Taylor
brought me closer. I heard a soft bang come from the living room. It sounded like someone
walked into the couch or maybe the end table next to the door. "He's in the house. Taylor
he's in the house." I tried to whisper but my voice came out loud and shaky. Duncan went
over to the cabinet and pulled out a flash light.
"The batteries are almost dead." he said softly. I watched as he ran the
dull beam of light across out bodies. "C'mon." he whispered, walking into the living room. I
heard another sound and jumped.
"Duncan don't." I cried, reaching my hand out, as if I could stop him. Zac
touched my arm, and his mouth opened to speak. The lights flickered on for a brief
moment, just quick enough for me to see no one else was in the living room but us. Just
then the phone rang. Duncan reached down and picked up the cordless.
"H- hello?" he asked.
"What happened?" Kristi asked. Duncan sighed and pressed the flashlight
against his chest. Alittle to hard, because the light from it died, and we stood once again
in darkness.
"He's here." Duncan whispered to Kristi. She gasped.
"Are you all OKay?" she asked frantically. "Mom, he's there! Lorean's
there!" Kristi screamed. Duncan handed me the phone. Our fingertips grazed and his hand
was warm against mine.
"Get the cops." I said. Taylor and Zac leaned close to me. Protecting me. I,
for a split second, felt like I was back in Tulsa safe and sound. I saw myself laying on the
floor next to Taylor watching a pay per view movie. Just then Kristi's voice broke through
my thoughts.
"They're coming. Stay together." she said. "They'll be right there." I heard
another crackling noise and the phone went dead again. I sighed and threw it down on the
floor, frustrated.
A loud moan came from upstairs, and we all looked at each other. Zac grasping my
hand. I smiled weakly and walked up the stairs. Duncan just ahead of me, and Taylor right
next to me.
"Mom?" Duncan called. A muffled bang came from Patty's room.
"Oh no." Taylor moaned softly. Zac groaned and squeezed my hand. The
lights flickered again, and I heard Patricia call out Duncan's name. "Over there." Taylor
whispered, his lips next to my ear. I shivered and watched as Duncan slowly opened the
door to his mother's room. What seemed to be Patricia's figure appeared next to Duncan.
I blinked and when I opened my eyes I heard a smash. Zac, Taylor and I gasped, and
jumped back. Patty looked like she was holding a vase over Duncan's head. The shadow of
Duncan fell against the wall and slid down onto the floor.
