Chapter Twenty
I walked out of the clothes store, in the mall early Saturday morning, Taylor close by my
side. We were reluctant to come out, with Lorean still being out on the loose and all. Even
thought I stood up to him yesterday, Taylor and I were still afraid of what he could do.
But since it would be our last day together Patricia and Lacey insisted we spend the day
together.
"Now what?" I asked. Taylor smiled and rested his arm around my waist.
"Want some ice cream?" he asked. I laughed.
"Na. Want to..go home..or to the park..or something?" I said. "Anything away
from the mall!?!?" Taylor laughed and we walked outside.
"Let's go to the park." Taylor said. I wonder what people would say to me in
school on Monday. I thought to myself. Most of half the kids from school were at the mall
today. None of them said anything to me, but the looks on their faces explained
everything. Taylor and I walked slowly toward the park. Both of us were quiet. My mind
raced and I wondered if things between Taylor and I would be different.
*~*~* Minutes later we reached a large oak tree and we sat underneath it. Our bodies
close.
"Can I ask you something?" I whispered. Taylor looked at me as he shoved
his hands in his pockets. "I know Duncan and Patricia think something's up between us." I
paused. "I talked to Duncan and he actually thinks that when we were alone the other
night we did something....it." I told him. "He thinks we did it." I scanned Taylor's face, his
eyes sparkled and he had a smile on his face. I closed my eyes and remembered how Taylor
and I had a discussion about that night, the other day when we were in the woods. He
seemed upset, but I wasn't sure if he was upset with himself for stopping us, or if he was
upset that Duncan knew what we had started. That night that we were alone Taylor and I
had become very close to actually going all that way. But somehow we stopped. We realized
we are too young and we shouldn't be this experienced. Opening my eyes, I noticed Taylor
looking at me.
"I kinda figured he thought that. He gives me these unsure looks everytime
I see him." he stopped and looked up at the sky. "Are you glad we stopped?" Taylor asked
suddenly. My heart skipped a beat and I wasn't quite sure how to answer him.
"Um, I'm not sure." I said truthfully. Taylor rested his head against the
tree and he looked up at the naked branches.
"I know this sounds alittle corny., but what would have happened if we
didn't stop?" he questioned. I looked at him and leaned back against the tree.
"It's not that corny, actually. But like I just said I'm not sure." I paused.
"Can we not talk about this? It makes me feel weird." I felt my body heat rise, and I
instantly regretted saying that. I felt extremely insecure now that the question hung in
the air. Taylor nodded.
"I can't wait to go to Australia. It's going to be awesome." he said. I smiled
and followed his gaze. Taylor's eyes rested on a single leaf that looked like it was going to
fall. I licked my lips and looked at him.
"I'm expecting a few postcards. I want one a day!" I joked. He laughed.
"I'll try my best." Just then Taylor's thigh vibrated against me, and I knew
it was his beeper. He jumped and looked at it. "It's mom and dad." he said. I stood up, and
we ran toward my house.
*~*~* Zac sat nervously on the couch. He had been thinking about Kristi for the past two
days. Everytime he called, she'd hung up on him or found an excuse to hang up with him. "I
just don't get girls." Zac whispered. He crossed his arms aross his chest and stuck out his
bottom lip. "I just don't get them."
"Calm down." Duncan said. Suddenly the phone rang all eyes fell on it.
Duncan reached over quietly and picked it up. "Hello?" he asked. Isaac shivered, he
instinctively grew to think everytime someone called it would be Lorean, getting geared up
for another joy ride. "Is it Lorean?" he urged. Duncan laughed.
"It's for you. A girl named Celeste." he handed the phone to Isaac. Zac
raised an eyebrow and listened intentively to Isaac.
"Sure." he paused. Isaac had a large smile on his face as he stood up and
walked toward the large living room window. "Alright. I'll see you in a few, Bubye." he said,
clicking off the phone. "Is it alright if I borrow your bike?" Ike asked turning toward
Duncan. Zac rolled his eyes with confusion and went back to his nervous thinking.
"Alright. Keep my baby safe." Duncan laughed. "Hot date." he asked. Isaac
smiled and ran out of the house. "I want no scratches on her when you get back buddy!"
Duncan yelled after Isaac.
*~*~* I ran up the front steps of my house and flew head on into someone. "Oh, I'm
sorry." I apologized, stepping back. I looked up and realized I ran into Isaac. "Where might
you be off to?" I giggled. Taylor said hello and scooted past us and into the house.
"I'm meeting a friend." he said. I noticed he had an impatient look oh his
face.
"Go ahead, go. I want juicy details when you get back Mr!" I said as Isaac
waved me off. I watched as he petaled down the road. I turned and went into the house.
"Hi Duncan." I said as I walked into the living room. Duncan raised his head.
"Hello my fair Juliet." he said with a smile on his face. My mouth dropped
and I looked down at his lap. He was holding his script.
"Omigod!" I almost shrieked- "I totally forgot." Just then Taylor came into the room
with a unfamiliar look on his face. "What happened?" I questioned him. Duncan watched us
quietly.
"Mercury extended the trip." Taylor told me. I now felt dizzy and nausated.
"For how long?"
"Four months. Maybe even five if we can get the extended time." he stated.
I limply fell onto the couch.
"Wow." I gasped. "What are you going to be doing thats causing you to stay
there for that long?" I asked. Right then I didn't want to know.
"A new video." Taylor said. I turned toward Duncan and noticed Zac was
sitting wide-eyed next to us.
"Really?" Zac questioned. "That's awesome!" he squealed and then laughed.
