Chapter Twenty-Nine
My hands started to shake, and I didn't know why. The sides of my mouth felt sweet, and
I couldn't stand it.
"Mom?" Taylor bearly whispered. He whispered so softly, I was sure Mrs.
Hanson didn't hear him.
"Yes honey?" she asked, looking over at him. Tay stole a sidewards glance at
me before speaking.
"We never take the highway home." he said. I felt as if we were going to
pass out. Mrs. Hanson smiled.
"Your very alert Taylor. That's good in the future."
"Mrs. Hanson..please?" I said as soon as she finished speaking. Taylor and I
gave her pathetic looks, and she caved in as she moved the van two lanes to the right.
"Dr. Amarilo set up a meeting for you with Ms. Amy. She's a psychiatrist."
"What?" Taylor asked. "They think she's nuts?" he almost shrieked. My
mouth fell open, and I wanted to cry.
"Gee thanks Tay, I feel much better now!" I whispered under my breath.
Mrs. Hanson turned off the highway and onto a small one/two laned road.
"She is very nice Amanda. Dr. Amarilo thinks your making yourself..sick
because of..um...your too stressed." she told me. I looked at Taylor.
"About what?" Taylor turned around and asked me. I shrugged. Mrs. Hanson
pulled the van into a parking lot and stopped the car.
"The doctor kindly set two meets up. She believes Amanda is too involved in
her problems..her problems with you Taylor." she paused, I almost died. "Mrs. Amarilo set a
meeting up with Amanda and yourself today." Taylor gagged.
"Huh? Why?" he turned around and looked between his mother and me.
"I don't get it." I whispered. "I'm not stressed, I didn't bring this on
myself..it just happened. I don't need a psycho expert to tell me what to do and what not
to do with my life." I stated, raising my voice. Mrs. Hanson sighed and opened her door.
"I have no choice." she whispered. Taylor gave me a sad look and stepped
out of the car. I leaned over and locked his door. Tay stopped and he looked into my eyes
through the glass window that separated us.
"I can't! I'm not letting them do this too me!" I said aloud. I knew he and
his mother couldn't hear me..but was it my fault? No! How could someone think I'm causing
myself to become sick like this. Is it my fault my parents left me two months ago, or that
my 'brother' wants me, or that Loreen raped Kristi..and came back to haunt us? No! I
never caused any of this to happen..thats the way nature works. In her own sick way,
maybe, but I couldn't control what she's done to me. Mrs. Hanson exchanged words with
Taylor, and handed him the car keys. Cautiously Taylor unlocked the door and sat in the
passenger seat next to me. He said nothing, but locked his door.
"Is it me?" he finally whispered to me, minutes later. I shook my head. At
that second I realized Scott Robinson was nothing. Nothing compared to Taylor. At that
second I decided my parents death wasn't going to hurt me. At that moment I realized
Duncan cares for me, but can't control his own cravings, and that Loreen was just plain
sick.
"No." I told him. "Don't ever think it was you!"
"Mom said this meeting is only a test..-if you don't want too, I understand
that..but we can't stay in here forever." he stated.
"Try me." I said. He raised an eyebrow and touched my thigh.
"I'm still here Amanda..don't forget that I'm here for you." he paused and
kissed my cheek. "Will you come to the meeting for me? Please..-" he trailed and held open
his other hand. I smiled, and took his hand.
"As soon as she gets creepy on me..I swear I'm going to bite her and run!" I
laughed as we stepped out of the car.
"That's my girl." Mrs. Hanson said, wrapping her arm around my shoulder.
My fingers still entwined with Taylor's, we walked into the building.
Zac snickered. "So your saying they locked this place up because three soccer
players died on this field?" Shivering, he stepped off the field and sat on a tree. Alyson
laughed.
"That's what I was told." she paused, and sat next to Zac. Their bodies
sweating closely next to each other. "Zac.." Alyson started, but stopped so she could lean
forward. Without any warning Zac felt Alyson press her lips to his. Shocked, he allowed
her to kiss him for a few minutes, before he actually kissed back.
"Oh." he said. Alyson laughed, and blew some strains of hair out of her face.
"Wow." she gasped. Zac blushed and he looked away. "Zac." Alyson said,
taking his hands. He jumped for a second, and then looked at her. Not a word was said,
because all their words were expressed in another kiss. A long, drawn out, second awaited
kiss.
Isaac heard a small crash, and his eyes flew open. "AVERY! JESSICA!
MACKENZIE!" he shrieked, jumping off of the couch. Instead of baby-sitting, which he
should have been doing, he had been sleeping on the couch.
Darting toward the kitchen, he smelled chocolate. Reaching the doorway he
stopped. "Avery put those chocolates back in the cabinet! You know your not allowed to
have chocolate before dinner." he paused and then smelled essence and...he sniffed again.
Essence and peanut butter. "Jessica blow out those candles and get them out of the
bathroom sink! MACKENZIE! Get down here right now with those peanut butter cookies!"
Seconds later, Avery bashfully came downstairs with a bag of Easter chocolates in
her hand. "Thank you." Isaac said, yanking the box out of her hand. Mackenzie handed Ike
a sloppily mad pb&j sandwich, a crack glass container of jelly, (which he used a chair to
reach), and a piece of cheese. Isaac raised his eyebrow and looked at the three contents
Mackenzie just handed to him. "Cheese?"
"Bigs deal! Avery eats cream seas and storbellies!" he whined, before
retreating to the living room.
"JESSICA!" Isaac yelled, noticing he was missing a sibling. Avery snickered
suddenly before laughing and running to join Mackenzie. Not waisting anytime, Ike dashed
up the stairs, the contents still in his hands. "Jess?" he whispered, before pushing open
the bathroom door. "Opps." he shrieked, noticing Jessica was sitting on the toilet, spraying
her mother's expensive perfume around the bathroom.
"ISAAC!" she shrieked, crossing her legs and pulling her pants as far up her
thighs as she could. Closing the door, Isaac almost died laughing.
"I said I was sorry." he paused and fanned the air away from his face.
"Phew!" he teased before running downstairs to clean up Mackenzie's mess. "I really need
to start getting paid for this stuff." he mused, licking some peanut butter off of his
fingertips.
I said outside the room, anxiously awaiting Taylor. I had just spent the past hour
and a half with Ms. Amy..and to find out she knows how I feel. She carefully explained
some options about some medication, and some stress relieving activities. Now, she was in
there with Taylor, and I urning to know what they were saying.
Twenty minutes later, Taylor and Ms. Amy stepped out of the her office. "All set."
she said, patting Taylor on the back as he walked toward me. I noticed almost immediately
that his face was red. Mrs. Hanson smiled and stood up.
"Thank you." she said, shaking Ms. Amy's hand. Ms. Amy smiled and thanked
us. We all said good-bye and went into the van.
"I'm starving." I pointed out, as we drove by a McDonalds. Mrs. Hanson
allowed a sly smile spread across her face.
"How 'bout it..Taylor?" she asked. Tay smiled. "Alright..Big Mac's for my
babies." she said, making a quick U-turn. Taylor and I laughed, exchanging quick glances.
Mrs. Hanson pulled into the drive-thru and ordered food for the whole family. "Let's just
hope Isaac woke up late and didn't make us dinner." she laughed. Taylor raised and
eyebrow and looked at his mother.
"How do you know about that?" he asked, in complete awe. Mrs. Hanson
touched his hand and laughed.
"Mothers know all and see all." Taylor's head shot around and we looked at
each other.
"Uh-oh!" we both said, in a teasing motion. Mrs. Hanson smiled.
"I'll let some things by!" she laughed, and we drove home in silence. All of
us thinking about different things, things that no one had the guts to talk about.
