The “ANNIE” and The “ALARM” 1894, Both Cutters

During the height of a terrific gale on April 17, 1894, the cutters were wrecked at Ruapuke Island. The Alarm broke and shifted from her anchor and was smashed to pieces on the rocks, but her crew managed to reach the shore safely.

The Annie also broke away from her anchor and collided with the cutter Deveron. Captain M. Doyle, master of the Annie, jumped on board the Deveron, but the other two members of his crew remained on board. The latter vessel went to pieces on the rocks, and the two men were drowned. The crew of the Deveron managed to beach her in a safe place, and she was later refloated.
