The CAROLINE 1860

Caroline, barque: On April 1, 1860, the vessel was totally wrecked on the New River bar. The barque was inward bound from Newcastle with a cargo of coal, and when crossing the bar struck heavily. Her rudder was unshipped and the Caroline became unmanageable, stranding on the bar, where she soon afterwards became a total wreck.

The Caroline, No. 33,018, was a barque of 401 tons register, and had recently been purchased by Messrs Jones, Cargill and Company, who intended converting the barque into a store ship at Invercargill.
