The

Industry, brig: A terrific gale of wind, combined with a drunken crew, caused the loss of the brig on February 28, 1831, at Easy Harbour, Stewart Island. A vessel of 87 tons, the Industry, which was engaged in the sealing trade, was lying at the Codfish Island settlement, Stewart Island, when the storm arose. On the advise of “Tommy” Chasland, a well known identity of Southland in the early days, and after whom Chaslands Mistake was named, the vessel sailed for Easy Harbour to take shelter. She arrived there safely, but the crew being too incapacitated by liquor to brace the yards, the brig went ashore and became a total wreck. The Captain, ten seamen and six Maori women were drowned, only Chasland, his wife and two of the crew being saved.

The Industry was under the command of Captain W. Wiseman, who was a son-in-law of Captain John Grono, of Sydney, part owner of the brig.
