The “JANE” 1884, Cutter

While beating out of Caroline Harbour, Ruapuke Island, on October 26, 1884, the cutter was totally wrecked. The vessel missed stays, and the wind at the same time falling light, the anchor was dropped, but owing to the rocky bottom would not hold, and the vessel drifted to within a cable’s length off the shore. Here she struck on a pinnacle rock and sank in about ten minutes. The crew launched the boat and pulled round to the heads, where the cutter Rona was lying, the master and crew of which proceeded to the wreck. By this time the Jane had been washed high enough on the beach as to be partly dry at low water.

The Jane, No. 52,216, was a cutter of 25 tons register, built at Catlins River, South Otago, in 1868, by William McPhee, and her dimensions were : length 50.6 ft, beam 14.7 ft, depth 5.9 ft. She was under the command of Captain John McMillan.
