The SQUAW 1865

Squaw, brig: When inward bound on November 7, 1865, from Newcastle to Invercargill with a cargo of 213 tons of coal, the brig sustained damage on the bar of the New River, starting her sternpost and unshipping her rudder. She made so much water that it was deemed advisable to beach her. Her master abandoned her to the underwriters, and after a survey the brig was sold as she laid for the benefit of those concerned. The vessel became a total loss, the spot at which she was beached being now known as Squaw Point.

The Squaw, No. 32,696, was a brig of 166 tons register, commanded by Captain David Reid, and registered at Melbourne
