The translators of the Jehovah’s Witnesses New World Translation purposely
mistranslated certain words to make their version fit their theology. Listed
below are some examples of their mistakes.
Correct Translation |
New World Translation |
Matt 1:23 "…which translated means, ‘God with us’."
(Jesus is "God" with us) |
"…which means, when translated, ‘With Us Is God.’"
(This confuses the meaning of the text) |
Matt 27:50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up
His spirit. |
Again Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and yielded up his breath. (changes
"spirit" to "breath") |
Luke 23:43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you
shall be with Me in Paradise."
(see the "No Soul Sleep" study) |
And he said to him, "Truly I tell you today, You will be
with me in Paradise." (NWT moves the comma. Jesus said numerous
times, "Truly I say to you" but never "Truly I say to you
today.") |
John 1:1 "…and the Word was God."
(see the "John 1:1" studies) |
"and the Word was a god." |
John 8:58 "…before Abraham was born, I AM."
(see the "I AM" study) |
"…Before Abraham came into existence, I have been." |
John 14:9 "He who has seen Me has seen the Father." (Jesus
identifies Himself identical with the Father) |
"He that has seen me has see the Father [also]."
("also" is not in the Greek manuscripts) |
John 10:33 "for a good work we do not stone You, but for
blasphemy; and because You being a man, make Yourself out to be God."
(The Greek word is "God" not "a god.") |
"We are stoning you, not for a fine work, but for blasphemy, even
because you, although being a man, make yourself a god." (They
stoned people for calling themselves "God," not "a
god.") |
Acts 20:28 "…to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with
His own blood." (The church was purchased with the blood of God) |
"…to shepherd the congregation of God, which he purchased with
the blood of his own [Son]" ("Son" is not in the Greek
manuscripts) |
Rom 9:5 "…from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is
over all, God blessed forever." (In this verse, Christ is
called "God"). |
"..and from whom Christ [sprang] according to the flesh; God
who is over all, [be] blessed forever." (the words
"sprang" and "be" are not in the Greek manuscripts). |
2 Cor 13:5 "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith…that
Jesus Christ is in you." (This verse shows that Christ lives
IN true believers) |
"Keep testing whether you are in the faith…that Jesus Christ is in
union with you." (the words "union" and
"with" are not in Greek manuscripts). |
2 Cor. 13:14 "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the
love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with
you all." (This verse is a Trinitarian Scripture. Therefore, the NWT
attempts to change the meaning). |
"The undeserved kindness of the Lord Jesus Christ and the
love of God and the sharing in the holy spirit be
with all of you." (The Greek word is "tou" means
"of" and is mistranslated to "in" because JW’s don’t
believe the Holy Spirit is God. The word mistranslated "sharing"’
is translated "fellowship" in 2 Cor. 6:14 in the NWT. |
Phil 1:23 "…having the desire to depart and to be
with Christ…" |
"…what I do desire is the releasing and the being
with Christ…" (JW’s don’t believe people go to be with Christ
when they die, so this verse is mistranslated.) |
Phil 2:5-6 "…Christ Jesus, who although He existed in the form
of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God." |
"…Christ Jesus, who although he was existing in God’s form,
gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be
equal to God." (The words "namely" and "should"
are not in Greek manuscripts.) |
Col 1:16 "For by Him all things were created…"
(Jesus is the Creator, therefore He is God.) |
"Because by means of him all [other] things were
created…" (Should be translated "by." The word
"other" is not found in Greek manuscripts.) |
Col 1:16 "…all things have been created by Him and
for Him." (Jesus is the Creator of all things.) |
"…all [other] things have been created through him and
for him. ("Other" is not found in Greek manuscripts). |
Col 1:17 "And He is before all things, and in Him all
things hold together." (Jesus is the Creator of ALL things.) |
"Also, he is before all [other] things and by means of him
all [other] things were made to exist." ("Other" is
added.) |
Col 2:9 "For in Him all the fullness of the Godhead dwells
in bodily form." |
"Because it is in him that all the fullness of the divine
quality dwells bodily." |
Titus 2:13 "…the appearing of the glory of our great God and
Savior, Christ Jesus." (Jesus is called God and Savior) |
"glorious manifestation of the great God and of [the]
Savior of us, Christ Jesus." ("of the" is added to confuse
the meaning.
In Titus 1:3—God is called Savior.
In Titus 1:4—Jesus is called Savior). |
Heb. 1:8 "But of the Son, ‘Thy throne, O God, is
forever and ever…" (This is the vocative case in Greek—which
address Jesus as "God.") |
"But with reference to the Son: ‘God is your throne
forever…" (Another mistranslation to confuse the reader)
