Christmas Traditions in Portugal

Here in Portugal, Christmas tree may be a natural pine-tree or artificial one. It does not matter, since it is nice. We decorate it with stars, little balls, knots and several electrical lights with various colors.

We sing Christmas songs like "Happy Christmas", "Silent Night", "White Christmas", "Pine-tree", etc...

The traditional food is boiled codfish (codfish from Norway) in Christmas supper and roasted turkey at Christmas lunch on December 25.

Home decoration is made according each family and, usually we use holly and decorative paper ribbon. We make beautiful settings with dry flowers, candles, and we open the presents at midnight.

We can't forget Christmas candies which are delicious: sweet vermicelli; a kind of bread fritter and King-cake all with Oporto wine. The king-cake have inside of it a dry bean and nobody want to catch it or he will have to pay the king-cake or buy another one to eat on the 31 December supper at midnight.
