Touched by an ANGEL

As it turned out, the driver of the pickup was drunk. That would have been his third DUI arrest in Texas. He had already served time in a county jail. I am glad that I do not have to think or worry about him destroying anyone else's life now. A flight care helicopter was called from the scene of the accident. The helicopter crew loaded my passenger and the drunk driver who hit me. They left me there with no emergency medical treatment because they really thought I was dead.

Suddenly, from out of nowhere a lady stopped to help. She wanted to know why nobody was working on me. They told her I was gone. For whatever reason, she tore the soft-top of my jeep back, checked for, and found my pulse. Nobody got her name or saw her leave. I believe she was my Guardian Angel. Another helicopter was called to pick me up at that time. A lot of precious time was lost before I received the necessary medical care.

I was finally loaded into the helicopter and flown to Parkland Hospital. The drunk driver died within the first hour of the accident. The girl I had in my jeep suffered head injuries and was out of the hospital within a month. I had severe head trauma and internal injuries. I had a closed head injury; the inside door handle had punctured my left side and crushed my left rib cage.

The doctor said my side looked worse than hamburger meat. He had to rearrange all of my internal organs. My left lung had collapsed, with my stomach in it. It had to be re inflated 3 times. My right lung collapsed twice, I think. The first operation took 10 hours. They had to rearrange everything. I guess I was a preverbal mess, to say the least! They had to use the paddles on me 3 times to start my heart up again. They moved me up to the ICU unit.

I had an excellent doctor. The lady who checked to see if I was alive had to have been an angel. If it had not been for her actions, I would not have gotten that helicopter and I would now be dead. I knew Jesus was with me. And I also know he sent that lady to rescue me. This was no TV show, folks. This was very real. I was in a coma from the moment of impact. I saw this lady and what she did for me. Then I stayed in a comma, for 6 months.

I had to be taken back to the operating room about 3 or 4 hours after the first surgery, while I was still in ICU. There was a problem regulating my blood pressure. According to the doctor, that was an indication of more heart problems. To save time he went through my rib cage. As his fingers surrounded my Aortic valve, it blew up. That operation took another 10 hours. I was sure I was in safe hands. Another aortic valve had to be transplanted into my heart. Then about 3 weeks later, while still in ICU, my left jugular vein had to be transplanted in another 4 hours of surgery. I had already been through 24 hours of surgery.

I was in Parkland's ICU for almost 2 months. I stayed in a comma for 6 months. Later I was moved over to Baylor Rehabilitation Center. The doctors believed I could be partially rehabilitated. They did not know how much success I would achieve...LOL.
