"Our hearts were saddened on this day
today our Mom passed away.
So many many things run through my mind but

Except that we loved her dearly and her

But there's one thing we know for certain,
our love for her will never die."
By Alvin West

Michigan
In December of 1954 John and Idella purchased Cherry Creek
Cabins in Mio Michigan.

During the depression, John was laid off and they were
on welfare. The kids used to carry apple butter sandwiches
or sometimes mustard sandwiches to school. They used to
get white oleo with a colored capsule to color it with,
but sometimes they just ate it white. When there was no
oleo they would put salt into lard and eat that on their
bread. They ate macaroni until it "was coming out of
their ears". Sometimes they would buy day old bread or
fish from a man who came around selling these things.
They called him "the fish man".

When they lived on Williams Lake Road, at first they
did not have a car. John used to ride a bike to Pontiac
to and from work. One day he "froze his ears".

Rememberances of M.M. Hollister: "Aunt Ethel used to
tell me, Dad used to be very fussy about his clothes
as a young man, didn't want any wrinkles in his shirts.
He wore silk shirts sometimes. He met my mother at a
candy shop in Pontiac where she dipped chocolates when
he worked for the Telephone Company. Dad couldn't go
any further with the Telephone Company because he
couldn't do algebra."

J. C. West won the prize for having the largest family
at the GM Truck and Coach Company picnic in (at least)
1937, 1939 and 1946.

The following poem, written by Alvin West is being
included in this history, as I believe that his poetry
sums up what each of us feels in some way, when love
one's unexpectedly pass away:

"How many tears can one person shed? How much pain can
one family bear?
We laid Mom to rest in the cemetary, and just a few days
later Dad was there.

No one can tell us the reason, though we've had many of
our friends try.
The more we try to figure it out, the more it makes us
want to cry.

And even if we did find the reason, it wouldn't help
much to ease the pain.
Cause they're both up in heaven, and we can't bring
them back again.

Maybe we should feel happy, to know they are together
up there
For when they were alive and healthy, they went together
everywhere.

And now they are together again, and they will always
have each other
And we will always have pride in being able to say,
they were my father and mother."
Alvin West
