WOW...can you believe that's Joe's way back
when it first opened?
Once the site of a Tobacco Shop, Joe's opened in 1960.
Located 60 miles from Philadelphia in the beautiful
Lehigh Valley, Joe's opened for buisiness as a small
town neighborhood tavern catering to the working
folks of Bethlehem Steel and other local industries.
To this day, Joe's Tavern still opens at 7AM for the few night shift
workers still in The Valley!!!
Started by Joe Salak himself a coal miner who lost his
job when the mines of St. Clair flooded from a devastating
Hurricane. He needed to support his family so he traveled down to Bethlehem and bought himself a bar. (Sort of like Jed Clampett). Found no bubbling crude but did manage to get a few bubbling beers on tap for a mere nickle a glass.
Can you believe that...a dollar went a long way back then!
He put his wife, Helen, to work in the kitchen (where else?), draped an apron on his son Russ and there you have it..Joe's Tavern was born.
Not much has changed since the old days. Russ now owns and operates the bar but Joe's original philosophy prevails...treat your customers with respect, make it fun and affordable to socialize and have a few drinks, and by all means never, ever gossip...it's just bad for buisiness.
Joe's is the kind of place you can go to unwind, meet
your friends, make some new ones and not worry about trying to impress the person next to you,
unless of course you want to!
Never any intention to expand into the nightclub scene, his is a humble buisiness. A place where you can ask the bartender "who is the picture of the guy
on the wall?" and he'd know! After all why hang
memorabilia and call yourself a sports bar if the people working there don't know the diffence between a golf ball and a basketball?
A die-hard New York Yankee and Giants fan, swap some great sports stories with Russ and his patrons.
