Comment:  This description is identical to land purchased by Richard Medlin in 1728.  No record has been found of the sale by Richard Medlin of this 440 acres or the other 200 acres.  It's possible Richard Medlin was deceased and Nicholas was a heir.

We suspect Richard Medlin of Cashie River in Bertie County, N.C. 1720 - 1739, was most likely father of Nicholas Medlin and William Owen Medlin and perhaps had other sons.

This area was the first settlement in the Carolinas called Albemarle Precinct in 1663. Governed by Wm. Drummond, a man from Scotland, it was largely populated by Scots.   Gov. John Archdale, member of the Society of Friends, purchased a large tract where members of the Society of Friends settled. These people were called Quakers.

William Owen Medlin witnessed deed of William Wilder of Johnston County, N.C. to Nathaniel Carter - 300 acres for 18 Pd. on south side of Flat Rock Creek in William Mainer's line.

a map shows Flat Rock Creek as a branch of Sandy Creek.   The south side would be near a branch called Devil Cradle Creek, and north of Tar River.

Bk. F, p. 51  -  24th  Jan. 1763
William Wilder of Johnston County, N.C. to Williamson Medlin of Craven County, N.C. for 6 Pds., 100 acres on north side of Flat Rock Creek in William Manoer's line.

Witn:  Nathaniel Carter
William Mainer

Comment:  See deed from Joseph Norris to Timothy Royal Medford Medlin for 100 acres on south side of Flat Rock Creek dated 9th February 1779.  This area was organized from Granville County in 1764 to form Bute County and in 1779 was in the new Franklin County.

As no one the name of Williamson Medlin was found in this area or in North Carolina in the 18th century, this is no doubt William Oen Medlin.

Court Minutes for Johnston County, North Carolina

Bk. II 1767 p. 34 - 35.   Deeds proven included Sampson Braswell and wf. Christian Braswell proven by William Owen Medlin. The will of James Douglas in Bertie County, who lived near Cashie River, witn. by Joseph Medlin, and the 1st names of Medlins in Johnston and Bute Counties, N. C., also James Wilson Medlin, a first name used as late as 1850, must prove Wm. Owen Medlin's close relation to Richard Medlin and his neighbors on Cashie River and Cashie Swamp.  See deed witns.  Foster Mason, as one, was also in this area of Bertie County.
