Why Are You Purchasing a Bunny?

This is the first thing to consider when you decide you want a rabbit. You must consider this question extremely seriously, because the health and welfare of the rabbit is in your hands and depends on the answer.

Are you purchasing a rabbit because.....

you want a small companion for the kids?

you want to show it off to that snooty next-door neighbor who thinks she’s all that because she just happens to own a huge but cute lop?

you’ve always had a weakness for their cute little noses?

it Easter and it will thrill your kids to death?

you’ve become knowledgeable about them and can care for their needs and will enjoy their company?

Whatever the reason, make sure it’s a good one. The kids might be excited for the first week of their new pet, but often afterwards become bored with their pet and argue over who has to feed it and who has to clean out its droppings tray. It’s nice to share an interest with a neighbor, but make sure this animal is the right pet for you and that you are ready to care for it and tend to it. Just because you have a weakness for their wiggling little noses, twitching ears, and soft fur doesn’t mean you’re prepared for the responsibility of grooming them and cleaning out their cage, feeding anf watering them, clipping toenails and checking teeth for proper wear down, etc.

Easter bunnies are good for the holiday, but often afterwards become the target of complaints, abuse, and neglect. Don’t buy a rabbit just because of the holiday. In fact, if you’re set on getting a rabbit, wait until Easter is over before going out and buying yourself a bundle of love.

You must be knowledgeable and have the financial funds to take care of their needs. Rabbits aren’t nearly as expensive as most other pets, but you will have to buy feed and some equipment that may wear out over time.

A rabbit is a privilege and responsibility, not a right or a fad. Be truthful with yourself. Do you really think the kids will take full care of their pet? Will your other pets take to it or will it be a constant war? Will you grow steadily impatient when it has accidents on your carpet before it is housetrained? When you have answered all these questions and still decide that you want a pet rabbit, then turn the page to find out more about keeping these wonderful animals.
