The Stoner Weapons System
The Stoner Weapons System is built around a standard receiver, bolt group, and trigger group. These components were assembled with other components specific to each configuration to complete the desired weapon. The gas system used is a long stroke piston system rather than the gas tube arrangement utilized by the M-16 series of weapons. This gas system allowed the weapon to function with a belt feed as well as a magazine. The short summary is, you can take the basic receiver group and by mixing and matching parts, end up with any one of a dozen weapon variations.
The Stoner faded away into history as it was adopted by the Morrow Project as their primary weapons system.
