The following of what you are to read is a review of the first episode of the cyber-punk classic Bubble Gum Crisis episode one. I am an avid fan of the series and have decided to review the series not as a fan but as a person for the first time having seen the show. The review in it's own is to be in my hopes as non-biased as possible. Meaning I neither intend to glorify nor bash the series and review it with an open mind. Thank you. X. Luevano
The show Bubble Gum Crisis has been now renowned as a classic in the world of anime along with such others as Akira and Lum: Urutsei Yatsura. It is a series about a group of renegade women called the Knight Sabres. The series itself is comprised of many characters main and somewhat just there. There is Sylia who runs a women's lingerie shop by day and leads the Knight Sabres by night. Priss who is an all out bad girl punk rocker from a group called the Replicants. Lina, an aerobics instructor who is sometimes the butt of a joke by many of her friends. Nene who works as a secretary for the A.D. Police and is a computer genius and sometimes more the butt of a joke than Lina is. Mackie whom is the brother of Sylia and obviously needs to get a girlfriend so he can stop hitting on Sylia. And Leon an A.D. Police officer who has the hots for Priss. The show kicks off with a concert of the Replicants. The opening switches from shots of the concert to a showdown between the A.D. Police and a boomer (a robot war machine). The beginning as a whole showcases some splendid animation for it's time and shows individuals of the show throughout it. The music adds to it by hyping you up as you watch the ensuing battle rage on. All throughout the battle the A.D. Police are getting slaughtered by this boomer and can't do anything about it. The boomer even steals a chain-gun off of a helicopter and starts to mow down people left and right which only leaves you to say "oh ****". Finally the a group of four people come in and take down the robot as if it were nothing leaving Leon in his place saying "So these are the infamous Knight Sabres" thus introducing us to our heroines for the first time. The main story of the first episode is suttly laid out. The military has acknowledged the presence of the Knight Sabres and are impressed by their hard suits with which they would like to acquire for their use. They offer the Knight Sabres a job. When the military's plans to analyze the suits fail they desperately try to regain the trusts of the K.S. By giving them a job to capture a man named Frederick and a little girl named Cynthia. The Sabres agree to do so but are cautious for they feel there is more to it than what really is. Throughout the episode we run into others and also learn some background info on characters. There is a man named Mason who seems to be connected to Sylia's past. We also learn how the hard suits were acquired and vaguely how the K.S. Came to be. Bubble Gum Crisis episode one is an overall good anime. The only flaw I saw (which is a nitpick sort of) is that in the opening sequence the band playing was somewhat off. They were strumming their guitars in an odd order and banging their drums a little bit off key from the music (but as I said before this is really just nitpicking). All in all a good anime. Note thought, do not watch this dubbed. The dubbing is decent but at some parts it is very darn irritating and cheap. Let's hope the good work is kept up. X. Luevano Comment? Feedback?
