Rick Hendrick's original design was 5 star and all his cars have 5 in them, (Terry Labonte 5, and Wally Dallenback's 25) People said when Jeff came into racing that Jeff's number was probably going to be 35, but instead they were thinking along the lines of 46, the number of Tom Cruise's Mello Yellow car in Days of Thunder since Hendrick provided the car for the movie. Jeff always had the numbers 4 and 6 recur in his racing career when he was younger.
16 was his famous open wheel car. Some think the 24 came from his home address when he lived in Pittsboro, Indiana which was 6246. Still , nothing is for sure.
Another thing I have recently found out is that Jeff's favorite number is 6, and if you were to add 2 +4 you would get 6 ! If you think you know the real story behind the number 24, e-mail me!
"One of my most famous designs is the Jeff Gordon car. And, Dupont gave me their logo and gave me plenty of artistic freedom to use whatever colors I wanted to do. But, with the car being an automotive finishes car, I pictured a rainbow of colors and the oval design of the Dupont logo lent itself to a rainbow, an arch and it actually just kind of happened, you know, I did the different colors and put them on the car and all of a sudden there you have a rainbow."
Some of the information was from "Natural Born Winner: The Jeff Gordon Story" by George Mair, and the Sam Bass quote was from " Inside Nascar" the TV show aired September 30, 1998

Jeff has many Dupont #24 cars that he drives in races. All the cars are very similar but some have different purposes. Or, he may have the same car but different set ups. For example, Jeff would have one set up for his car for qualifying to make his car real fast so he could get the pole.
His race car on the other hand would of course be fast but would have another set up, like in the wheel lock, so the car would have better handling at high speeds to pass cars. Jeff also has show cars which are "retired" cars. They are usually cars that have so much damage they cannot be raced anymore, so they put a nice shell over the car to make it look race ready.
. You can see many of these show cars at the Hendrick Motorsports museum in Harrisburg, North Carolina. Jeff also has back up cars so if he crashes during qualifying, he will have an extra car with him. They name their cars?!?
All the cars have a number and a name, here they all start with a "B" supposedly for Brooke!. Blacker, Buster, Belle, Blazer, Beavis, Bullet, Bricker, Backdraft, Butthead, Brewser, Grand Master B, Beaver, Bristol ! Blacker is his most successful car, and the first 24 car made, ironically winning the most poles and races! Blacker's last race was at "The Winston" when he was painted up in the Chromelusion Fire Prism car, and is now at the Hendrick museum, and still out of gas.
If you just want to race your car around the track.. inspection If you are about to qualify a car first round ..inspection..Win the pole in qualifying .. inspection..Crash a car during qualifying and use another one.. inspection.. Your car does not make the field in the first round and want to make a second attempt.. inspection.. You're fastest second round qualifier.. inspection.. Change a couple things on a car.. inspection.. Practice at happy hour.. inspection.. Start a race.. inspection..Win a race.. inspection.. inspection, inspection.. You get second place.. inspection.. You get third place.. inspection..the car picked at random after a race.. inspection..
Catch my drift? If you hear any backseat-driving race fan say that this or that team cheats, they don't know a thing.. yes it is possible to cheat but if you know about the inspection system, you would understand it's very difficult to do so.
Plus the winning car literally has his whole engine torn out of his car and inspected by professionals.. don't underestimate NASCAR... A race team is inspected at least 3 or 4 times, but normally the car is inspected about 6 times, depending on race weekend.
