THe PASTe TRIö. "We are the Gods of
Punk!"
Nothing could be more true than this
self proclaimed title. The band was
created in the summer of 1996 by the two
founding members, guitarist Nigel
Killingsworth and drummer Duncan
Thornton III. The two met in London,
England and after serious thought,
decided to form a band. Said Duncan,"
Nigel got like...drums, and I got
like...nothing, so we decided to make a
band."
The band's first name was 'The Bluddy's'
but after the realzation that the word
bloddy doesn't mean the same thing in
America and the impact being lost, the
name was changed to The Päste Triö
because as
Nigel stated in an interveiw," Most of
the people that go to our shows are
stupid, and paste is simple to say."
The opinion was the same with Duncan,
who said," That's right, they wouldn't
understand it here in America. Americans
think bloddy means like a pig you cook
in an oven but you know.".
Most of the time, The Päste Triö would
write
and practice in Duncan's mum's house in
her bedroom. The majority of The Paste's
most famous song's like 'Sheep', 'I Hate
Almost Everyone(in the world)', 'Stinky
The Goat', and 'God's Of Punk' were
written the first time they played
together in that very room. They even
recorded their first album with a cheap
portable tape recorder hanging from the
ceiling of that room!
But that album did not sell like they
planned. Inexplicably, they decided to
abandon all of their songs and record
'music' in an avant-garde fasion. When
asked about their first album, Nigel
commented, "I hadn't actually learned
how to play guitar like as in chords.
Before, I just threw it at the amps and
then I'd urinate on it and it didn't
work real well because they...the
critics didn't...our first album called
'Here Is A Guitar Being Peed On' didn't
do very well. They didn't get the music.
They called it noise and I was like,
'That is good stuff!'."
But they did not let such a minor set
back get them down. Their follow up
release entitled 'A Cesspool Of
Billylabs" was accepted on a much
broader
scope. This album was recorded in three
days and included much of their best
material to date. Stories from the
recording sessions range from Nigel
being kicked in the face by Duncan while
putting down a guitar track, to Duncan
being set on fire and forced to play a
drum solo until the flames burned out
itself, without being put out by a
concerned recording engineer or by
Nigel. The critics were
more open-minded about this release
calling it,"An interesting and talented
album of crap".
But nothing broke The Päste Triö into
America
until their week-long marathon concert
performances at Madison Square Garden,
where at one point playing 17 shows in
one day at the same venue! In the
beginning, they were playing to a packed
house, but becoming sour once they
noticed people weren't coming in great
numbers as they did at the beginning of
the week. Some would say that The Päste
Triö
'forced' their popularity on their fans.
The concerts were a complete success,
but fame has its price. The last night
of the shows, Duncan was arrested for
battery and assalt. He apparently was
holding people against their will in the
concert hall to see the 17th show that
night. Duncan's story of that incedent
is as follows:
"What we did is Madison Square Garden,
when we played 17 shows in one day,
people were saying as they were leaving
from the 16th show, that they have
quote,'already seen us'. And we were
like,'we've got one more show and all
you people are going to stay' and
they're
like we've already ... remember...'seen
you' and I goes like, 'Nigel, we have
got to do something'. So I got this like
giant bat and I walked over and I was
walking through the audience and people
were thinking like that I was going to
give them like autographs. So they were
like, 'oh Duncan, sign my shirt' and
was like,' ok, as long as you stay for
the 17th show' and they said,'No,we are
not going to stay'. So I took that bat
up
like this and I go
crack...crack...crack. And the three
people that were there stayed and
whatched, and they whatched every show
there-on."
When asked, Duncan stated that he was
not angry about the arrest, saying that
it gave The Päste Triö some much needed
publicity.
Currently The Päste Triö are working on
their
3rd album, which will be released only
on vinyl and 8-track tape at the request
of Duncan, sometime in the fall. They
would not get into the
details but Duncan did say that the new
album will include a twenty-minute drum
solo opus entitled, "Duncan's Wrath".
Sales of the new album are expected to
top the sales of such classic albums
like The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper' and Pink
Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon'. The
Päste Triö will then tour the US and UK
to
promote sales of their album.
The Päste Triö are, without doubt, the
greatest punk band. They are overflowing
with talent and personality. The other
thing about The Päste Triö which makes
them
such a great band, is their close
relationship with the audience,
something that is very rare from artists
today. With the potential they are
showing now at such an early stage in
their career, they are bound to be
around for a long time releasing the
best albums ever recorded. The
Päste Triö are truly legends in their
own
time!
"What I think punk is...is the Gods
of
Punk...
...that's what we are"
