Cheryl Reece Myers
Class of 1963
Cheryl graduated co-valedictorian from Crescent High School (1963) and continued her education at Oklahoma State University with a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design (1967), a Masters Degree in Housing (1972), and a Doctors of Education in Interior Design Pedagogy (1978). She is a lifetime member of the scholastic society, Phi Kappa Phi. From 1963 until 1972 she was an interior designer for Tom Hoch Interiors, a hospitality design firm in Oklahoma City; from 1973 through 1976, she owned an interior design firm, Myers Haus Interiors in Edmond, Oklahoma.
As academia was a good fit, her career path lead back to education. In higher education, she served as coordinator of the Interior Design program at the University of Central Oklahoma from 1974 until 2001. A philanthropic donation designated the interior design director's position as the Cheryl Reece Myers Endowed Chair in 2012 and set up a student scholarship in her name. Cheryl served as director of the Interior Design program at the University of Oklahoma from 2001 until 2005 and upon retirement in 2007, she was designated as Professor Emeritus of Interior Design from the College of Architecture. From 2005 until 2007 she taught classes through the Art Institute Online, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. During the summers from 1998 until 2007, she conducted classes for the Interior Design program at the Unversidad Jose Cecillio de Valle in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Dr. Myers was accepted to present at the International Conference on Arts and Humanities in Honolulu, Hawaii on Global Interior Architecture: Criss-Cultural Teaching in Honduras. She is currently an adjunct professor in interior design at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, Oklahoma (2007 to 2015).
Dr. Myers was a registered interior designer (RID) for the State of Oklahoma from 2007 to 2013 and certified by the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) She has been active in the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). For 25 years she served as a national workshop leader for the STEP program, conducting training classes for interior designers to sit for the national examination. Myers published a series of articles for the ASID, ICON AND REPORT promoting the educational program between 1995 and 2000. She was inducted into the American Society of Interior Designers College of Fellows in 2007. Independently, she still conducts training workshops for interior designers preparing to sit for the national examination.
Myers was a site visitor for the Council of Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) conducting onsite university accreditation. Through her company, Design Consultants Associates, she has served as a curriculum consultant to interior design programs in the United States, Honduras and for the College of Women at the University of Kuwait.
She participated in Bible Study Fellowship as an individual group leader for six years. Over the years, she has taught adult class for Sunday School, directed the art program for Bible School and sang in the choir. She is a charter member of the Theta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and served in many offices including president.
Cheryl has traveled to forty plus countries, conducting university study tours, doing individual research and participating in archaeological expeditions. She has participated in a survey of the statues on Easter Island, Chile and has excavated Etruscan tombs in Populonia, Italy. She was published in 2002 in the series Chicken Soup for the Travelers Soul with an article, Peace Corps Mama.
Cheryl resides on a farm northeast of Crescent with her husband of 49 years, Dean Myers (CHS 1962). They have two children; Deidre Myers (CHS 1987) of Oklahoma City and Aric Myers (CHS 1994) of Crescent.
