Dr. Lloyd Herren
Class of 1939
Lloyd Herren graduated from Crescent High School with the class of 1939. During World War II,
Lloyd served his country for four years, eighteen months of which were spent in the combat in
the European theater. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the field and attended Officers
Training School in Fountainbleau, France. His service medals and citations include the Purple
Heart, Combat and Expert Infantry Badges, Bronze Service Star, EAME Combat Medal and the Belgian
Fourageres Unit Citation.
Lloyd Herren received a Bachelors and a Masters in Music from George
Peabody College in Nashville. In 1955 he was awarded a Doctorate in Education from the University
of Texas in Austin.
Dr. Herren's professional career has included teaching in colleges and
holding administrative positions. Early in his career, he was Assistant Professor and Supervisor
of Music Education at Northeaster State University, the University of Texas and Fort Hayes Kansas
State University. For twenty-one years, from 1966 until his retirement in 1987, he served the
Metropolitan Sate College of Denver. He was Professor and Chairman of the Division of Humanities
for seven years and the next fourteen years, was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Music.
Dr. Herren was very active in professional organizations, serving two terms as president of the
Kansas Music Teachers Association and two terms as president of the West Central Division of the Music
Teacher National Association. He was a member of the STerring Committee, which organized the American
Choral Directors Association, was a charter memeber of that organization and was later appointed
the first Kansas State Chairman of the Association. He was a judge for the National ASCAP Award
Competition and served as summer guest lecturer for Auburn University and Central State University.
Dr. Herren has also been a performer. He has conducted may large choral-orchestral works as
well as concert and chamber choral groups. He performed as a tenor soloist in recitals, opera and
oratorio productions. He played viola in the Nashville Symphony and the Denver Community Arts
Symphony. He has directed many church musci programs throughout Tennessee, Texas and Colorado.
Dr. Herren served as a member of the committee which set up the present CHS Alumni Scholarship program.
He wrote the guidelines used to administer the scholarships.
Dr. Herren has been honored by the
Metropolitan State College of Denver with the Distinguished Service Award, the honorary title of
Professor Emeritus upon retirement and the Faculty Advocacy Award.
Since retirement, Dr. Herren
has continued to be active in the Colorado Chorale, serving as board member. He and his wife, Mary,
serve their church, travel and enjoy being with their two children and four grandchildren.
