OUR SCHOOLS The first settlers in this community,
coming largely from states where educational advantages were par excellence, at once
recognized the necessity of some form of school for their children. Being denied
temporarily, public school facilities they clubbed together and patronized a select school
conducted by J. T. Pfrimmer, who received for his services the voluntary contributions of
his patrons. This was during the winter 1890-91. Following the select school the same
teacher conducted a second three months term and was paid the munificient salary of
$25.00 per month by the government out of the Mississippi Flood appropriation. The first
school district was organized under the old township system in 1891 with Fred Cress as
director and the building now occupied by Will McCammon as a dwelling was erected.
The seats were made of cotton-wood puncheon and were of sufficient length to
accommodate six pupils. J. T. Pfrimmer was employed as the first public school teacher,
he served during the term of 1891-92. In the summer of 1892 the second building was
erected by the school district, aided by the M. E. church society and the old Christian
church organization and was used jointly for school and church purposes. Mrs. Fanny
Oliver-Cress taught the young idea during the year 1892-93. As the school board had no
janitor F. L. Cress decided to help the good work along and married the teacher, along
about the holidays. In 1893 a change was made in the Oklahoma school laws and the
district was incorporated as the Independent of Crescent with 3 directors. In 1893 J. T.
Pfrimmer again taught six months but resigned to start in the nursery business and E. M.
Hoag finished out the year. After this two teachers were employed--a principal and
assistant, and they served as follows: 1894-95...Arthur Holliday and wife: 1895-96...
Maud Martin-Ruck and mother: 1896-97...Same: 1897-98...O. C. Reynolds and Mrs.
Monica Wilkie-Miller: 1898-99...T. S. Welch and Mrs. Wilkie-Miller: 1899-00...Ida
Good and Mary Sloan: 1900-01...Bert Trimble and Mary Sloan: 1901-02...E. M.
Hoag and Zela Bahruth: 1902-03...E. M. Hoag and Mary Sloan. During the summer of
1901 the present two-room school building was erected at a cost of $1,500. This has
already proved too small and during the present season a new modern $5,000 building will
probably be erected in the new town, affording ample facilities for some years to come.
