Pink Floyd: The Wall
By Dave McCoy, San Francisco Sidewalk
Director Alan Parker's style contains all the subtlety of men jackhammering cement outside of your window at 7 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Fortunately, so do the lyrics of Pink Floyd pessimist Roger Waters, making this overblown acidhead's nightmare a match made in hell. Bob Geldof is Pink, a burned-out, alienated and near psychotic rock 'n' roll star who gradually builds a "wall" around his phobias, paranoia, jealousy and sexual insecurity. Parker matches the material with grotesque close-ups, jittery editing and pointless imagery, foreshadowing the emptiness of MTV aesthetics several years ahead of schedule.
