“NO!” I screamed as loud as I could. “Please, please say you’re kidding right?”
“I’m sorry. She had just lost too much blood. We tried Mr Hanson, we really did.”
He didn’t look sad. He looked as if he had planned that line and said it a million times before.
“The police have some questions for you. they also have a line up they want you to have a look at when you feel it right.”
It was the governments fault. That’s what I had come to conclusion. If they took more care with the people on the street, if they took more notice of kids like Shelly, this wouldn’t have happened. I felt my heart beating out of control in my chest, making it hard to breathe. I had lost her. Everything at that point seemed to crumble.
“Excuse me Doctor...” Mom spoke up, she looked at the name tag on the guy’s jacket. “Doctor Sear,I
don’t think my son is ready to do any line up for the police just yet. Can we get back to
you later?”
The doctor glanced to the police who gave a simple nod and walked off.
I sat in shock. No words left my mouth, no sound entered my ears, no nothing. it was unbelievable. Sure I had read about things like this in the Newspaper, seen it on the TV, but I never thought in all my life it could happen to someone I knew, cared about and loved.
“Zac?”
“What?”
“You wanna go in and spend a little time with her?”
I contemplated the option and stood to my feet.
“We’re gonna get that prick right? He’s gonna pay if I have to kill him myself.”
“We’ll get him.” Ike reassured me. He wiped away a few tears that too had built up in his eyes. “Take all the time you need.”
Her room was brightly lit and if it weren’t for the stains of blood which covered the
hospital sheets, she looked so peaceful, so serene I cursed why anyone would try to hurt
her.
Death has always scared me. I didn’t know what to do confronted with a dead body, but
as my hands shook, and I panted from those hours of crying I knelt. I knelt beside the bed
and prayed. I prayed that god would look after her, and to give her the life which she
deserved.
“Dear god,
Please, I beg of you with all my heart and all my soul,
keep this angel safe from harm, in
your presence and glory.
Teach her ways of the world no one has been kind enough to share with her,
and when
you’re done with that, tell her how much I cared.
Amen.”
