'NSYNC's Bass, Fatone Get To Big Screen 'On The L'

With Jennifer Lopez atop both the music and movie charts, members of pop kingpins 'NSYNC have a new challenge in their midst. The first to accept will be Lance Bass and Joey Fatone, who have signed on to star in the romantic comedy "On the L," according to Reuters. A spokesperson for the group said Bass will play the lead role, and Fatone has been offered a lead and a cameo but is still deciding which he will take. The script is still being developed, so character names have not been finalized. "On the L" about a couple who meet briefly on their city's train system and must then find a way to reunite will be directed by Eric Bross, whose résumé includes the USA cable movie "The Chippendales Murder" and independent films "Restaurant" and "Ten Benny." Bass has acted before, but on the small screen he appeared in an episode of the WB's "7th Heaven" last year (see 'NSYNC's Lance Puckers Up For "7th Heaven"). His recently formed production company, A Happy Place, will produce the $10 million "On the L," which is based on the short film "On the Line." Miramax Films will distribute the movie, which is slated to begin filming in March, Reuters reports. 'NSYNC announced at the Cannes Film Festival last May they would play fictional characters in a music-driven film set to begin production in 2001, but their spokesperson said the band is still searching for the right project. The group is scheduled to perform later this month at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards, where its nominated for three awards, including Best Pop Vocal Album, for 2000's top-selling No Strings Attached.

Halftime Show Offers Own Highlights

MTV gave the Super Bowl plenty of lights, cameras, and action Sunday night. The 10-minute halftime show - which was produced by MTV for the first time and featured a mix of rock, pop, and hip hop stars - was a drastic change for America's premier sporting event. N'Sync and Aerosmith headlined the show, which provided viewers with fireworks and constant strobe lights. Each band took turns singing songs before coming together - along with special guests Britney Spears, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige - for a rendition of Aerosmith's 1975 classic ``Walk This Way.'' With thousands of ``fans'' flooding the stadium infield, the presentation resembled a concert. Many of the fans held neon signs, also giving it the look of a WWF match. But the highlight of the event came just before the jam session. Under each seat at Raymond James Stadium, there was a one-time-use flash camera. The fans were asked to simultaneously snap a shot when prompted by the big screens above each end zone. Their cue came during Aerosmith's second song, and the fans responded to give the 70,000-seat stadium the look and feel of a giant disco. The halftime show also came with a warmup act, a 90-second film featuring comedians Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller. But something obviously was wrong with the film, because it flickered in and out for most of its duration, and it was difficult to follow.

Lance and Joey of *NSYNC are gonna be in a movie. Lance Bass is furthering the cause of blending together the teen scene and the silver screen, as he, along with Wendy Thorlakson – formerly of Tom Hanks' Playtone Co. – have started up a film production company called A Happy Place. This business is setting out to make soundtrack-driven movies featuring pop stars, athletes and musicians, according to a report from Variety. The company's first feature project is called On the Line and will star Bass and Joey Fatone. The flick is based on a short film called On the L, and the plot revolves around a guy and a girl who meet briefly on a train, and then strive to meet once more. The project is reported to cost $10 million, and will begin production in March. No director is attached as yet.

'N Sync's 'Simpsons' Episode To Air February 25

'N Sync members Lance Bass, J.C. Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Justin Timberlake will play themselves on an episode of The Simpsons titled "New Kids On The Blecch" airing February 25 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. In the episode, boy-band impresario L.T. Smash recruits Bart along with fellow band members and friends Milhouse, Ralph, and Nelson. Just as the band finds success, Bart's sister Lisa discovers that Smash has ulterior motives for forming the group. Appearing on the longest-running prime-time animated series in the world (according to the Guiness Book of World Records) will undoubtedly be a unique experience for the group. Timberlake was recently asked about his most memorable experience with 'N Sync. "We've had so many great experiences," he replied, "but the experience that we've had, and the mileage that we've put on all over the world, and the memories--that's what we'll never forget." 'N Sync joins a long list of musicians who have been caricatured on The Simpsons -- including ex- Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Sting, U2, Aerosmith, Sonic Youth, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bette Midler, David Crosby, the Ramones, James Taylor, and the Who.

Brazil’s star-studded ‘Rock in Rio’: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jan. 14 .- Rock in Rio, the seven-day mega-music festival dubbed “Brazil’s Woodstock,” got off to an unusually quiet start with three minutes of silence to contemplate peace. Thousands of fans gathered in the specially built City of Rock in western Rio, waved white handkerchiefs and then sang along as the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra played “Imagine” by John Lennon. THE FESTIVAL BEGAN Friday, runs through Sunday and picks up again from Jan. 18 to 21. It features a wide range of musical genres and a diverse group of acts, including Britney Spears, Oasis, Neil Young and R.E.M. Teen sensations ‘N Sync and Spears, scheduled for next Thursday, have been the star sellers, followed by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Britney Spears “I love it! The peace and the feeling, I just wish it weren’t confined to this festival. I wish we had it in my country,” said Aviad Herman, a 23-year-old Israeli student backpacking through Brazil. Feel-good marketing and a lineup that includes some of the world’s hottest recording artists are expected to draw some 1.5 million fans from across South America to the $36-million show called “Rock in Rio for a Better World,” making it the biggest paying music festival ever. Some 16 years ago, the first Rock in Rio set a record with 1.4 million people. Only about 450,000 fans flocked to Woodstock, New York, in 1969. STING IS BIG On Friday, Brazil’s legendary Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento started the public rocking, but rock veteran Sting, 49, was likely to steal the spotlight when he closed the show. Advertisement “Mr. Rock in Rio,” as the local press has dubbed Sting, is expected to sing, among other songs, “She Walks This Earth,” a version of a song by Brazilian folk singer Ivan Lins that has won Sting a Grammy nomination this year. Sting, who became a household name in Brazil with his high-profile defense of indigenous tribes in the Amazon rain forest, said: “I’ve been coming to Brazil for many years. Brazilian music has informed my career.” “I am greatly honored to open the first night of Rock in Rio with some of my greatest friends,” he told reporters a day before the show. Promoters booked 139 bands, including 38 major national and international acts, for the festival. The event is sponsored by America Online and will be aired on satellite broadcaster Direc TV and on Warner Bros. channels. Organizers say they will donate 5 percent of sales to a Brazilian anti-violence group and U.N.-sponsored projects. FIRST MAJOR ROCK FESTIVAL Unlike other high-minded festivals like Live Aid and Farm Aid, this year’s Rock in Rio is out to make a profit. Advertising mogul and promoter Roberto Medina started the Rock for Rio concert back in 1985. It was Latin America’s first major international rock festival and coincided with the collapse of Brazil’s 21-year military dictatorship. From its youthful idealism to the rain and mud, Rock in Rio was a south-of-the-border Woodstock, with fans from across the continent turning out to hear groups like Queen, Rod Stewart and Yes. A second Rock for Rio, staged six years later, was less successful. Unlike other high-minded festivals like Live Aid and Farm Aid, this year’s Rock in Rio is out to make a profit. All the bands will be paid, and Medina himself stands to clear a cool $2.5 million. Medina’s pledge to give 5 percent of the gross earnings to charity after the festival ends is expected to amount to about $6 million. In addition, there will be seminars and discussions about everything from saving the earth to promoting world peace in a special “For a Better World Tent.” SOCIAL MARKETING Not everyone is comfortable with Medina’s ‘misery marketing’ strategy. Some feel it glosses over the real problem in a country where nearly half the population gets by on $150 a month or less. Whether acts like Guns ’N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Britney Spears will also raise social consciousness is anyone’s guess, but Medina is convinced he’s on to something. He calls it social marketing. For months, Medina has been involved in charitable events that keep the festival’s name in the news, giving away $1 million in scholarships and computers for poor communities. Not everyone is comfortable with Medina’s “misery marketing” strategy. Some feel it glosses over the real problem in a country where nearly half the population of 170 million gets by on $150 a month or less. “I think it’s good the festival is donating money to people who need it,” says Carlos Albuquerque, a music critic for Rio’s O Globo newspaper. “I just don’t think three minutes of silence and an orchestra playing (John Lennon’s) ’Imagine’ to a lot of people holding white handkerchiefs is going to make this a better world.”

TIMBERLAKE ANGERS FANS AGAIN (Tue. January 9, 2001 )

N'SYNC's Justin Timberlake angered and disappointed fans when he refused to sign autographs and let his bouncers insult them, according to reports from the US. Die-hard fan Kevin Roberts waited in the Los Angeles rain outside the bands' hotel for hours to get Timberlake's autograph for his little sister. But when Timberlake turned up, he is said to have refused to sign for the handful of fans that had gathered. His bouncers then turned nasty, swearing and shouting at the fans for harassing him. "He was pretty rude," says Roberts. "He just blew us off. The other guys were all really nice to us. JC stopped to talk and sign autographs, so did Chris, but Justin just wasn't interested. "He just walked past us so when we got angry and shouted out at him, his bouncers turned on us. One of them called me 'a piece of shit'. "There's no need for it. He has the fans to thank for where he is today and really, at the end of the day, he's just another boy in another boy band." Timberlake, who is dating fellow teen popstar Britney Spears, was in LA for last night's American Music Awards. Just before Christmas, a female fan filed a lawsuit against Timberlake, after an incident in a hotel lobby. He is being sued for false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

'N Sync's New Album Due In May

'N Sync is in the studio this month recording the follow-up to its diamond-certified 2000 album No Strings Attached. The new set is scheduled for release in May. 'N Sync singer J.C. Chasez told LAUNCH that the group will begin a tour in support of the album shortly after its release. Chasez explained: "We're starting to work on the next record now. [In] January [or] February we're beginning it. It's a whole new year and it's a whole new millennium, so we're going to start from the beginning and we're going to just do it all over again. We're going to start with the record -- the music comes first. We're not going to do anything else until we get it right, and then once the record's done, we'll hit the road again ." Chasez noted that several tracks 'N Sync is considering for the album are already completed. "I've already heard some of the stuff, so I know it's good," he said. "This new record is going to be pretty hot. The last record was full of energy, and I think some of the energy is going to carry over into this next record. There's going to be a lot of energy in it, but I think it's going to be stylized now. We're experimenting a bit with some different sounds now." Chasez added that it's likely that groupmates Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, and Lance Bass will all have production and/or songwriting credits on the new album. "Everybody is going to get more involved. We've had the experience of the last album, and then we're going to take that and put it into the next record, and hopefully, like I said, do it again." The quintet doesn't feel any pressure to match the single-week sales record of 2.4 million they set with No Strings Attached, according to Chasez. "You can't do that every time. Nobody can," he noted. "We're glad that we had a great year this year, and the next important thing for us is another great record itself. Musically, we have to be satisfied with the record now." Last week, 'N Sync received three Grammy nominations for the record-breaking No Strings Attached: best pop vocal album as well as record of the year and best pop performance by a duo or group with vocal for the hit single "Bye Bye Bye."

'N Sync Reacts To Its Three Grammy Nominations: 'N Sync is nominated for three Grammy Awards, including the coveted Record of the year award for the single "Bye, Bye, Bye," the National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences announced today (January 3). The hit song also landed the quintet a nod for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocal. 'NSync also received a nomination in the best pop vocal album category for No Strings Attached, which sold slightly less than 10 million copies in the year 2000, making it the top-selling album of last year, according to SoundScan's year-end music industry report.

LAUNCH asked 'N Sync singer J.C. Chasez how selling 10 million albums compares to being nominated for three Grammy Awards. "It's just two different ball games, you know?" he replied. "When you sell a record, you're glad to be employed. When you're here, you're glad to be a part of music itself. You know, this is more an artsy-type deal--these are music appreciators and things like that, people that you look up to because of the music that they listen to and things like that. So it's a pretty cool show to be a part of." Album sales and Grammy nods may be "two different ball games," but Chasez says 'N Sync is definitely excited to be a player in the Grammy game this year. "Well, it's pretty cool. I mean, you grow up watching the Grammys. You see all your heroes on there, and now we're finally on here, hanging out with all the people we used to look up to, so it's pretty wild." The 43rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 21.

TIMBERLAKE SUED BY TEENAGER (Tue. Jan 2, 2001 )

'NSYNC's Justin Timberlake is being sued by a teenage female fan for false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Timberlake, boyfriend of Britney Spears, was handed the lawsuit after an alleged incident at a St Louis hotel, according to reports in the US.

Danielle McGuire, 15, states she was in the Chase Park Plaza lobby waiting to greet the band, as they arrived, when the incident occurred.

According to the lawsuit, Timberlake was the only member of the band not to say hello to a gathered throng of fans, prompting McGuire to comment: "I like JC better anyway. He's cuter!"

A member of the band's security is then said to have invited her upstairs, after confirming with the girl that she had made the comment. The suit alleges that the security guard wouldn't allow McGuire to tell her mother she was leaving the lobby.

McGuire's lawyer states that Timberlake then met-up with the girl upstairs, where he is alleged to have backed her up against a wall and berated her for her earlier comment. The verbal assault is alleged to have lasted a considerable amount of time.

A family friend, news journalist Randy Jackson, is said to have interrupted the stand-off, having witnessed some off Timberlake's rant. He is said to have limped-off complaining of a pain in his leg when Jackson arrived.

A jury will decide damages in the suit if it gets to court. Meanwhile, it has been predicted that Timberlake's girlfriend Britney will marry by July, according to American psychics. Leading clairvoyants have joined forces to make the predictions, which also include the suggestion that Ricky Martin's personal life will hit the headlines in 2001.

The Backstreet Boys' third Jive album "Black & Blue" didn't break the first-week sales record of 2.4 million copies set by fellow Jive act 'N Sync's "No Strings Attached" earlier this year. But the set did move nearly 1.6 million units this week according to SoundScan, easily debuting at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and besting the 1.13 million copies the Boys' "Millennium" album sold in its debut week last year. The only other album in front of the Backstreet Boys' new set in terms of first-week sales is Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" (Web/Aftermath/Interscope), which sold 1.76 million copies earlier this year. "Black & Blue" was buoyed by a huge promotional blitz at Wal-Mart stores. The retailer was the sole U.S. merchant to stock a version of the album with the bonus track "What Makes You So Different (Makes You So Beautiful)," and last Tuesday carried a special satellite broadcast performance from the group on its Web site and in the entertainment centers of 2,000 of its stores.

*NSYNC MURDER PLOT FOILED

A US teenage boy's plot to kill *NSync was foiled by his mother just as the boy band were due to arrive in North Carolina on the second leg of their American tour. It's been reported in the American publication the 'Gallatin News Examiner' that the parent found a folder containing all her son's drawings and plans to intercept the band and kill them. The 17-year-old boy had made detailed notes on how he was going to rob a gun store, killing employees if necessary, then he would travel to Atlanta where *NSync are due to play tomorrow (October 21st). Once he got there he planned to murder each member of the group and anybody else who got in his way. Police Sheriff, Don Linzy, told the newspaper: "The boy keeps saying how the band 'get all the good girls'". Pop singer Britney Spears has a high profile relationship with the band's Justin Timberlake. Linzy speculated that perhaps if all parents played a more active role in their children's lives then incidents like the Columbine High School tragedy could be avoided. He said: "I know it's never an easy thing to do, but she did the right think in alerting authorities. She found something disturbing and she took action." It's believed that the boy is known to have had psychological problems in the past and is now the subject of further evaluations.

*NSYNC SICK OF BEACKSTREET BRAWL

US boy band *NSync say they are sick of the phoney rivalry between them and the Backstreet Boys. *NSync say they are fed up with constant pressure to outdo the other boy band and say the rivalry had been fuelled by outsiders. "People have set us up against each other since we broke their record for selling albums," complains *NSync's Lance Bass, "I wish we hadn't broken it because its going to be a focus every time any of us release anything." Band member Chris Kirkpatrick also wishes the Backstreet Boys would back off. He says: "I feel a little sorry for them because they feel they've got something to prove. They're very successful at what they do, and they're talented. "If the record doesn't get broken in October, then it doesn't mean the album sucks does it? I hope people still get the album because I think its going to be good".
