NSync's Lance negotiates to travel on Russian space rocket
Thursday 21st February 2002

Lance Bass could be going from NSync to in space.

The boyband member is negotiating to travel on a Russian rocket for a mission in November, according to MirCorp, the Amsterdam-based space travel company.

Bass said in a statement he was "completely overwhelmed".

"I'm looking forward to completing this lifelong dream," he said.

The plan to fly to the International Space Station still requires the approval of the Russian space agency, Rosaviakosmos, according to MirCorp.

The partners in the international space station programme - the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and Europe - also would have to approve the trip.

The 22-year-old Bass attended space camp near Titusville, Florida, when he was 12. He says he will have to undergo five or six months of training at Star City, the space training centre outside Moscow, before blasting off.

A Los Angeles TV production company, Destiny Productions, is one of several corporations offering to sponsor Bass's journey, and hopes to document it for a television special called Celebrity Mission: Lance Bass.

Bass's voyage would follow that of California investment banker Dennis Tito, who reportedly paid $20 million (£14 million) to visit the International Space Station last year. South African tycoon Mark Shuttleworth is reportedly spending the same sum to fly to the space station on a Russian rocket in late April.

The fate of NSync during Bass's absence is unclear. The pop group is to begin its Celebrity 2002 tour in Portland, Oregon, on March 3.

OUT OF THE CLOSET!

N'SYNC's Chris Kirkpatrick is to showcase his very own line of clothing at the start of New York Fashion Week.

Kirkpatrick, who launched his FuMan Skeeto range two years ago, will debut the new spring/summer collection at the Girls Rule! fashion show on February 11.

The singer's urban streetwear designs, which are believed to incorporate Asian styles, have previously been displayed at New York's 'Planet Hollywood', though they have never been modelled at a major fashion event.

According to sonicnet.com, the N'SYNC star will be on hand to oversee the show, which will be held at Soho's Puck Building next month.

The FuMan Skeeto line is now available to buy at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's and Eaton's stores across North America.

N'SYNC LOSE THE FORCE

N'SYNC have been edited out of the new Star Wars film, because of the adverse reaction of some of the movie's followers.

As dotmusic reported last week, the US pop five-piece were expected to make a brief appearance in 'Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones'.

A spokesman for the group told how Justin Timberlake and co would appear in a battle sequence, describing it as, "in a big scene with lots of extras".

However, band member Joey Fatone has told listeners of a Florida radio station that the scene has now been dropped.

He told the Carson Radio Show: "I'm going to make it officially known they dropped it because people made a big deal about it."

"We're not going to be in it and I'm not going to comment on it any more."

Star Wars fans had, perhaps not surprisingly, reacted angrily to news that the boy band would be appearing in the film.

'Attack Of The Clones', starring Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen, is released in the US cinemas on May 16.

  SONG FOR JUSTIN

Despite a staring role in a recent TV commercial, Sir Elton John has declined to appear in his last two videos instead casting younger stars to play the Great Dame.

Following in the footsteps of Robert Downey Jnr's appearance in the video for Elton's last single 'I Want Love', 'NSync's Justin Timberlake slips into period costume in the video for Elton's new single 'This Train Don't Stop There Anymore'.

Watch a clip of the video above.

Britney's other half has an uncanny resemblance to Elton John circa 1973 complete with offensive suit, meaty sideburns and OTT glasses.

In the full length video you can also catch cameos by Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) who plays Elton's manager, Robert Hernandez who plays Vidal Sassoon and David Kelly as "Bunny".

'This Train Don't Stop There Anymore' is out on January 7
