The castle is composed of two parts an upper and a lower, each had a stong gate and round basstions on each side , with a ditch and draw-bridges , and it is probable was entirely re-built by the Conqueror when he visited this city A.D. 1069 Within the upper Ballium are some towers of Norman architecture ; one is called Julius Caesar's in the upper part of which has been a chapel as appears by the holy water pot , and some figures painted on the wall , and seems from the elegant roof and pillars to have been built at the same time and in the same stile as the Chapter House in the cathedral |
Outer Castle Gate taken down in 1790. |
