The Old Newgate and Newgate Tavern 1927

THE NEW or WOLF GATE Much has changed since this photograph was taken that it is hard to place it, yet it is only since 1938 that these changes occurred. It was in this year that the present Newgate was built alongside. It was called the Wolf Gate from a wolf's head incorporated in the badge of Hugh Lupus, which was carved on it. Originally a postern gate, it was enlarged in 1603 and rebuilt in 1608. For a long period in mediaeval times it was kept shut up because a young man abducted a Mayor of Chester's daughter through it, while she was playing one summer time with other girls in Pepper Street.
