In 1829 the Metropolitan Police Force came into being under the Commissioner at Scotland Yard . The original three thousand constables wore top hats and blue frockcoats and armed only with a truncheon, becoming known as the ' peelers ' or ' bobbies ' after Sir Robert Peel.
