The commander of the legion was the Legate (Iegatus Iegionis) who was a Roman senator he had the following officers under him .

     
 
Tribunus Lacticlavius (with a broad stripe on his tunic) a young nobleman of the senatorial class would generally take up this post .Under him came:Six Tribunes (tribuni militum)
 
 
Tribuni Angusticlavii (with a narrow stripe on their tunics) - men from wealthy families in the middle of a career which might lead to their becoming the commander of a cavalry regiment (praefectus alae) or financial administrator of a province (procurator).
 
The Camp Prefect (praefectus cast rorum) Usually a long-serving professional soldier, the most senior officer after the legate and the tribunus iaticlavius. who could have risen through the ranks to become primus pilu

The Centurion was distinguished from the other legionaries by the crest on his helmet and the vine-stick he carried as a symbol of his authority . Each century had :
a Centurion (centur,o) in command, an Optio second in command, a Tesserarius commander of the guard
a Standard Bearer (signifer).
