In the 18th Century Chester's Market was a favourite place for all, with all classes of goods offered for sale fish, meat and vegetables. At this time many of the richer classes were uneducated, they envied the Quack doctors who also frequented the market he would arrive in a carriage drawn by as many as six horses, they would sell elixirs and cure alls for everybody's ailments. The Dentist also had his place to stand he would have his pliers at the ready should there be the need to extract a tooth, to whiten the teeth he offered vitriol (sulphuric acid) which was to be gently rubbed in. It certainly removed the stains, but along with it the patients enamel. The delicacy of Dee Salmon was of such profusion that Gild masters were restricted by a clause of indenture from giving salmon more than twice a week to their apprentices. Today Chester's market is still one of the top city attractions with over 100 small businesses providing for the same needs as long ago. You can still purchase Dee Salmon, cheese, eggs, meat and fish,with vegetables produced by local market gardeners. You will find specialists in fashion, fabric and haberdashery.
