This was sent by Kenneth Ross!
I just noticed some of the grade schools in Cushing during the 1950's
and
thought, before I get so old and senile, I should write and validate my
sixth
graduation from Wilson elementary school.
I remember the red brick school was in the 1100 block of East Cherry
Street,
one block south of Broadway. Across from the school the U.S.
Government was
building steel homes which never caught on in this
country. We would walk to
school and there was a little grocery store
in the 1200 block of East Broadway
where we would stop and get penny candy
(when we could afford it). In the lot
just east of the store was a
sunken lot where we roughhoused after school.
The toughest kids on the block
at that time were Gene Privett (who lived in the
1200 block of East Cherry
Street), and Troy Retherford who lived in the 1400
block of East Oak
Street. I remember Troy was a small for his age but he had
more courage
than most. We marveled at him being able to climb to the top of
a
telephone pole and sit there without holding on.
I lived in the 1400 block of East Walnut Street and John and Ronnie
Rowden
lived in the 1400 block of East Maple Street. Their father, Joe,
was the police
chief and their mother, Pansy, was a nurse at the
hospital. Ironically, John
Rowden and I worked as special agents for
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms but our paths never crossed
during the 25 years I was there.
On the North side of Walnut was Main Street where Kelly Burden and
his
brothers spent most of their time with their grandparents, the
Ryans. The Burdens
actually lived one mile east and one half mile north
of town where Kelly's
father was a rancher.

Golly, I guess I should capture these memories for my bio before they
flee
never more to return.
Oh, I attended Cushing schools until my last semester and, after my
mother
had a stroke, I went to live with my school teacher brother in Arizona
where I
graduated high school. I later graduated from Oklahoma
State.
Sincerely,
Kenneth D. Ross
P.S. It is obvious that I have too much time on my hands,
huh?
